Essential accounting expertise for lawyers that you won’t easily get elsewhere
No matter what area of law you will practice, it will be important that you speak the ‘language of business, ie, accounting. Key competencies are an understanding of the accounting treatment for assets, liabilities, capital, income and expense accounts and the preparation and analysis of financial statements. Whether your interest is corporate, white collar crime, tax, dispute resolution or Intellectual Property law etc, such basic mastery of accounting principles will enable you to better represent your clients interests and be able to: evaluate the true nature of transactions, critically examine contractual provisions involving terms like ‘true sale’ or ‘net income’, spot ‘red flags’ in transactions which otherwise could lead to malpractice, understand the economic realities of a deal and its consequences that can include eg, loans, securitizations, royalties, sales, true risk transfers, loss as a measure of damages, etc.
This two‐day interactive workshop is intended to provide you with an understanding of the fundamentals of accounting and financial reports, including:
