FAQs

Please find answers below to some common questions about the careers service specific to students with disabilities. If there are any questions not listed below, please email us at careers@qmul.ac.uk.

Q: What does the career services offer specifically for students with disabilities?

A:  Under the new website, students can explore new information and guidance created by the careers team. New appointment bookings are available, with easier access to disability specific events, upcoming webinars, and further links for useful organisations. Please do keep checking back for any new updates.

Q: Are there any financial aid/scholarships available?

A: The Disability Students’ Allowance provided by the government supports students to cover any study related costs because of a mental health problem, long term illness or any other disability. Undergraduate and postgraduate students can get up to £25,000 a year for support without having to pay back anything. For more information, please refer to the ‘Careers Guidance’ tab on the main page.

Q: Do I have to disclose my disability to an employer?

A: No, you are not obligated to disclose any disability to an employer if you do not wish to. Although, in limited circumstances, employers enquire about your health or disability for things such as making reasonable adjustments during recruitment, so candidates are not at a disadvantage. For more information, please refer to the ‘Legal Information’ tab on the main page.

Q: Is there guidance on which employers are disability friendly?

A: By law, all employers must treat all workers equally regardless of any health conditions. Some employers highlight that disabled people can apply within their websites. There are useful websites which guide students on finding opportunities with organisations that are disability friendly and these could be found on the ‘Further Links’ tab on the main page. Finally, you can check whether an employer is disability confident via the Disability Confident scheme and their status. The full updated list can be found on this link.

Q: What are reasonable adjustments?

A: Reasonable adjustments are situations where employers make changes within the workplace to ensure workers with disabilities or any other condition are not put at a disadvantage during work. Examples of these changes could include implementing a wheelchair ramp, changing the equipment to a more appropriate setting, offering training opportunities and refreshment facilities.
