We have re-classified our student ambassador scheme in to three distinct roles – Student Ambassador, Senior Ambassador and Curriculum Ambassador. Details of each and links for how to apply (where relevant) are below.
Student Ambassador
Working under the direction of Queen Mary staff or Senior / Curriculum ambassadors, Student Ambassadors will assist in the delivery of outreach activities by sharing their own experience of studying at and applying to Queen Mary. Student ambassadors will represent the face of Queen Mary at a range of on-campus and external events, and as such will be enthusiastic and confident, with excellent communication and presentation skills.
Senior Ambassador
Senior Ambassadors will lead in the delivery of pre-written (non-academic) content, as part of outreach activities organised by the UK Student Recruitment and Widening Participation team. They will typically have worked as Student ambassadors for at least a period of 1 year.
Curriculum Ambassador
Curriculum Ambassadors will develop academic content and deliver this as part of outreach activities organised by the UK Student Recruitment and Widening Participation team, and Queen Mary's academic schools. They will be postgraduate and PhD students with some demonstrable experience of teaching and/or leading the delivery of workshops.
I’ve been a Student Ambassador for a year now, and I’ve been involved in many events around the university, including high- profile events such as Bill Gates’ visit and Nish Kumar’s stand-up comedy night. Additionally, I’ve represented Queen Mary at higher education fairs and sixth form talks. Through my role as a Student Ambassador, I have gained confidence speaking to new people, from campus tour groups to large groups of sixth form students. I have also improved my presentation and writing skills, which has been useful in my degree and will be useful beyond my degree. As well as learning new skills, I’ve helped new and prospective students, and worked with sixth form career services to help support people who might not think they are able to go to university. These experiences are valuable because when I look back at my time in Queen Mary, I can appreciate the amazing people I’ve met, the people I’ve inspired and the changes and events I was part of.’
– David, graduate Queen Mary Student Ambassador and Biomedical Science graduate.
‘I have been a student ambassador for one year. During this time, I have gained a real insight into how the higher education process works in the UK. The best part of being a student ambassador is getting prospective students excited about the prospect of getting into higher education, especially at a Russell Group like Queen Mary! One of the best skills I've managed to develop further through being a student ambassador is public speaking. Whether you're projecting yourself over a bunch of visitors during a campus tour, answering hundreds of questions at a Careers Fair, or directing people around on Open Days, being a student ambassador means adapting yourself to a range of different situations and thinking on your feet. Overall, being a student ambassador has truly been an integral and unique part of my university experience, with loads of opportunities to both develop yourself personally and professionally. Being a student ambassador is the perfect part-time student job.’
- Matthew, graduate Queen Mary Student Ambassador and Law graduate

Be part of something: As a Student Ambassador, you will join a dynamic team of students from diverse backgrounds. From undergraduate to postgraduate, the scheme provides a supportive and stimulating network for students of all academic areas and the chance to build friendships.
Make a difference: Promote social justice through our Widening Participation programmes and have a positive impact on the lives of younger students. Help young people with their decision making by providing insight into your first-hand experience and knowledge.
Build your CV: Professional skills and experience have never been more important for graduates and our Ambassador programme provides many opportunities to strengthen your CV. Work opportunities will be offered on an ad-hoc basis as and when they are available and Ambassadors choose whether to apply based around their academic studies. This allows students to maintain a manageable balance between their professional and academic work.
Whilst this is a flexible role, Queen Mary Student Ambassadors are required to do a minimum of 30 hours of work per 12 month period of engagement on the scheme, usually from November to October.
Students on a Tier 4 visa are restricted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time. This is a maximum of 20 hours in total in any one week for one or more departments and/or organisations. Whilst the student recruitment and widening participation team will monitor the number of hours these Student Ambassadors have worked for us, it is the student's responsibility to ensure the total hours worked does not exceed this limit across all jobs you may have.
Masters students are expected to work on their dissertation/project throughout the summer – for these students, this period between the end of Semester 3 and their course end date is not a vacation. For Master’s and PhD students on Tier 4 visas the maximum 20 hour limit applies all year round.
