Profile

Dr. Eng. Evangelos Markopoulos is an expert, entrepreneur and scholar on Process and Project Management, Enterprise Engineering, Knowledge Management, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship. He holds a BA on Computer Science (City University of New York, Hunter College), an MSc on Computer Science with concentration in Artificial Intelligence (New York University, Polytechnic Institute), and a PhD on ICT Project and Investments Management (University of Piraeus, School of Informatics).

In his Academic career Dr. Markopoulos taught Mathematics, Computer Science and Business Management under all academic roles (Professor, Visiting Professor, Teaching Fellow, Teaching Associate) and worked as a research fellow in research & development programs and initiatives, in Universities and Technical Institutions in the US, UK, Finland and Greece, such as Queen Mary University of London-QMUL (School of Business and Management), University College London-UCL (School of Management),  Royal Holloway University of London-RHUL (School of Business and Management), University of Essex (Essex Business School), Hult International Business School, University of Piraeus-Greece (School of Informatics), Turku University of Applied Sciences-Finland (School of Engineering), City University of New York (School of Mathematics), and Zayed University-UAE (School of Innovation & Management).  

He has 100+ publications in international journals and conferences and 2 books.  His research has received significant grants over the years.   In the academic year2020-21 his projects were funded with 1.4M€ from the EU, the Government of Finland and the UAE.

As a Computer Scientist Dr. Markopoulos worked mainly in the USA and at ΙΒΜ and at Siemens as systems engineer, and at Bell Laboratories of AT&T, as a member of the AI Experts Systems Application group. As an innovative entrepreneur and businessman later, he established and managed the EMPROSS Strategic IT consultants in Athens, Greece (Project Management), and participated under different advisory, management and leadership roles in companies and start-ups such as Sparthink Technologies, San Francisco (Innovation and Apps Development), SmartGATE, Cairo Egypt (Enterprise Engineering), ILSS, Athens Greece (Operations & Supply Chain Management), Sophia147+, London, UK (Knowledge and Innovation Management) and Loizou & Co (Financial, Maritime and Shipping Technologies).  Furthermore, he worked for over 15 years with the European Union Research and Development programs, managed and implemented international projects in Europe and the MENA region.

He invested and developed a number of innovations technologies in Process & Project Management & Engineering, turning them into applicable products and services such as the Company Democracy Model for Knowledge Management, the Ariadne Project Management Methodology, the Metrics Bind Analysis for Requirements Management, the MarkPoints for Project Tracking and others, Th Green Ocean Strategy for Sustainable Innovation and the Pin Ocean Strategy for Social innovation among others. 

In the classroom Dr. Markopoulos emphasizes on bridging with his the industry with academia through his applied research, but also on providing  and industrial opportunities, projects and initiatives  for his students. He works closely with the students offering academic and industry opportunities (internships, competitions, challenges), teaching, coaching and mentoring them successfully, with significant impact on their knowledge, further academic studies and professional careers.   He won with his students the Hult Prize global social entrepreneurship award  at the UN, and many other international competitions in Oslo, Beirut, Cairo, Tokyo, London, Shanghai, Sando Domingo and elsewhere. His teaching is based on the Applied Philosophy concept he created by integrating in any class the thinking and reasoning of major philosophers (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Voltaire, Descartes, Kant, Confucius, Smith, Locke, Bacon, etc), through which he achieves high student achievements, satisfaction, engagement and commitment.
