Gary Schwarz is Professor in Public Management and Strategy. Before joining QMUL, he served as the Head of the School of Finance and Management and as a Professor in Public Policy and Management at SOAS University of London, where he also was the Chair of the Division of Public Management and a Member of the University’s Executive Board. Prof Schwarz has held academic appointments at Harvard University, London Business School, Copenhagen Business School, and the University of Nottingham’s campus in China, where he served as Faculty Director of Teaching Development and the Director of the largest executive education programme. Previously, he was the Serviceline Leader Performance Management at Deloitte.
Prof Schwarz taught and supervised students at all levels, including undergraduate, postgraduate, executive education, and doctoral. He received a Dean’s Award for Excellence in teaching at Harvard University and became the first faculty member from the China campus to win the highest teaching prize at the University of Nottingham, the Lord Dearing Award for outstanding achievements in enhancing the student learning experience. At London Business School and SOAS University of London he obtained perfect evaluations, with all of the participants awarding the highest possible score for his teaching. He also held external academic roles at the University of Birmingham, University of Sheffield, University of Southampton, and University of the Arts London. Prof Schwarz completed training in the case teaching method at Harvard University and is a fellow at the British Higher Education Academy.
Prof Schwarz has engaged with policy makers from China, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among other countries. He has provided advisory services and management development for numerous public and private organizations, including Airbus, ArcelorMittal, Bangladeshi Ministry of Finance, China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation, Chinese Ministry of Finance, Danaher, Deloitte, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, European Union, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangzhou Municipality, Harvard University, Henry Schein, IBM, Invest Northern Ireland, Japanese External Trade Organization, Jordan Prime Ministry, Jordan Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Lufthansa, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Ningbo Municipal Government, Oracle, Petro-Canada, Shanghai Municipal Government, Terex Mining, and Volkswagen Group.
Prof Schwarz holds academic degrees from Harvard University, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of St Gallen, and WHU in Germany.

Professor Schwarz’s research focuses on how organizations and individuals can improve their performance, innovation, and the role of various leadership approaches (e.g., public, transformational, participative, servant, ethical, entrepreneurial, etc.) in the strategy process. His articles have been published in top academic journals, such as Public Administration Review, Public Administration, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, British Journal of Management, Human Resource Management, and Journal of Business Ethics. Prof Schwarz is a regular reviewer at leading academic journals and a member of the Editorial Board of Public Administration Review, the world-leading journal of public administration research, theory, and practice. Prof Schwarz also co-edited and co-authored the book Outsourcing, which reached the top-5 of the Financial Times list for German books.
