School of Business and Management

Yaalini Ilankumaran

Programme: Business Management BSc (2016)

Why did you choose to study at QMUL?
The school offered the chance to study the types of modules that I was interested in and I already knew students who were at Queen Mary and enjoying their time here. Queen Mary has a great reputation for the high quality of teaching provided, as well being known for students having the best social life in London.

What do you like most about your degree programme?
The flexibility of the course and the helpful staff are two of the best things about this programme. In first year we have to complete the compulsory modules to give us an idea about the core areas of business management, for the second and third years of study, we are able to choose modules, based on our experience from the first year modules, which allows us to mould our degree to our interests and suitability.  The teaching staff are very inspiring, and push us to do the best we can at all times, and we have an amazing careers department always providing us with a broad range of opportunities.

How would you describe the teaching and non-teaching support provided?
As a new student some of the challenges I faced were settling in and getting used to university style academic assignments. The business management social event at the beginning of the year provided a lively atmosphere, and helped me to talk to, and get to know fellow students and staff on my course. The lecturers also held extra office hours and sessions to help us understand and write university level work. They were very friendly and welcoming, which made it easier to get in contact with them whenever I needed help with any of my assignments.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?
Queen Mary has an amazing friendly campus environment which allows us to live the ideal student life, allowing us to balance the social and academic aspects. The student union gives us the opportunity to join many different societies, literally any kind of society that anyone can think of, will exist.

What is it like being a student in London?
London is very diverse, and the transport network is good and affordable, and as I live in London, the commute to Queen Mary is simple. There are always many social and cultural events happening, as well as networking and careers related events, as London is home to the headquarters many large firms.
