Studied: BSc Business Management
Now: Analyst at UBS AG
Why did you decide to study at QMUL?
I was attracted to its locational advantage in the city and the student campus it offered.
What is your fondest memory from your time as a student?
I would probably say achieving my first class honours, no one expected it nor did I. I learnt not to work harder but to work smarter!
What do you miss most about your time at Queen Mary University of London?
The social aspect! Casually catching up with friends before seminars and lectures. Most importantly, meeting new people from all over the globe.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
Being able to work with people globally, for example I manage a team in Shanghai on a day to day basis and liaise with colleagues in Stamford / New York. On a bigger scale, I contribute to the health of the investment banking industry by increasing transparency of OTC derivatives to regulators. To put it simply, my role is to govern OTC derivative trades and ensure eligible products are reported to a trade repository that will further validate the trades before sending it to the European regulator.
What are some of the challenges you face?
Constant development of existing regulatory regimes and new regulations keeps you on your toes. Complex trades with complex booking models require in-depth analysis.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying your degree?
Use this as a foundation to learn about business in general, and then slowly start to explore what area you want to specialise in. You have to know what you want after graduating or at least try to by reading around on different industries.
