Speakers :Josephine Maltby, University of York and Janette Rutterford, Open UniversityAbstract: A growing body of work has pointed out that women have been active as investors from early modern times onwards – as owners of property, Government securities and stocks and shares. Women’s activity as economic agents has been combined with a variety of views – that women are too hysterical, too credulous or too risk-averse to be able to invest, that they avoid financial planning or that they are excluded from it by a masculine culture in the markets. The paper examines the relationship between gender and finance in the UK and the US in the light of historical as well as contemporary research.
