The aim of the School’s Steering Group is to direct the overall development and management of the School to achieve its goals and objectives.
The Steering Group’s function is to advise the Head of School and direct major policy matters and decisions within the School. It receives and discusses all relevant planning documents. It considers the School’s interests, advises and assists the HoS in formulating the School’s academic policies and strategies, implementing those policies and strategies, monitoring progress and making the best use of the School’s resources. More specifically, the Steering Group is responsible for considering:
- issues relating to the overall development and management of the School;
- new business and programme development at a strategic level;
- issues relating to resource allocation and the annual budget; and
- any other strategic issues relevant to the School’s mission and objectives.

The School of Business and Management (SBM) Advisory Board offers advice on the development and work of the School particularly on future strategy and the employability of our students. The Board consists of a broad cross-section of members of the international, national and local business community, government and the third sector. The Board's elected Chair is Peter Fanning.
The functions of the Advisory Board are to advise on:
- The overall strategy and direction of the School, particularly in terms of issues such as undergraduate and postgraduate education, plus employability and the external image, identity and positioning of the School.
- SBM partnerships with business, government and the third sector locally, nationally and internationally and, when appropriate, facilitate such partnerships.
- Fundraising activities, especially opportunities most relevant to the teaching and research areas of the School.
- The future direction of the School’s research centres and themes in the light of potential opportunities and issues of contemporary relevance.

Kay Ali is Head of Partnership Development at Youth Business International, an NGO that works with supporting young people to start and grow their own business around the world. Kay has nearly 15 years’ experience across the charity, social enterprise, NGO and public sector. She is a business development expert with experience of securing international, national, local funding; as well as successfully managing and delivering charity, corporate and community projects. Kay is a board trustee of ROSA, The UK Fund for Women and Girls, and has volunteered at the Eat or Heat Food Bank to raise money and awareness of local food banks. She graduated from Queen Mary University of London with a BA (Hons) in Politics and an MSc in Migration.
Dr Veronique Bouchet OBE
Véronique is the Chief Medical Officer of PrecisionLife, an AI enabled precision medicine company. She has previously held a variety of senior international roles in the healthcare industry across several therapeutic areas and function, including drug development, corporate strategy, business development and venture capital. She is a Non-executive Director of Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst and Senior Independent Director of International Biotechnology Trust plc. She is also a member of the University of Oxford Expert Network.
She has an MB BS from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School and holds a BSc in Psychology from University College London. She has an MBA from INSEAD, a diploma from the Coaching Academy UK (Distinction) and has been awarded the Institute of Directors’ Diploma in Company Direction (Distinction).
Phil Eames is Chief Executive at NDP one of the UK’s leading digital agencies. He joined NDP in 2016, alongside this busy role he sits and works on a number of advisory panels and board roles including Advisor on data driven marketing and consumer engagement to UST Global and Chair of the Board at Akquire. Prior to NDP he was COO at Aimia, which is the world’s leading operator of loyalty programmes including Nectar in the UK and Airmiles in the Middle East. He is a specialist in loyalty consumer engagement and data driven marketing. Phil spent 7 years working with Fujitsu running their card and payment business prior to leading the digital business of Incepta PLC where he ran businesses in the US and Europe. Phil has extensive experience executing and running mergers and acquisition and company disposals and has wide international business experience having worked in and run businesses in Europe, US, India, Africa and the Middle East.
Peter Fanning is the chair of the Advisory Board. He recently retired after 11 years as chief executive of the CIOT (Chartered Institute of Taxation) which he joined in 2008 as its first chief executive following a brief secondment to the Office of the Permanent Secretary to HM Treasury. From 2004 Peter led the transformation of the Office of Government Commerce (an independent office of HM Treasury) firstly, as deputy chief executive/director general and later, acting chief executive/2nd permanent secretary. He previously served as the founding director of London’s Centre of Procurement Excellence based in the former Association of London Government; managing director of IPF, the commercial arm of CIPFA; and chief executive of the 4Ps, established to support Local Authorities procure through the PFI. Peter spent over twelve years with the NatWest Group, where he was a director in NatWest Capital Markets and a former head of product development in the Commercial Division. Peter has served as trustee and board member of The Coalfields Regeneration Trust and is a former committee member of Hyde Housing Association.
Sinead Finn worked for Ryanair for 13 years during the company’s most prolific growth years, establishing an outstanding track record for increasing revenue and market-share as head of sales and marketing, and later as director of commercial revenue. She was responsible for the management and development of all ancillary revenue streams during a period of significant growth. She joined Ryanair when the airline was carrying fewer than 3m passengers and left as the airline headed towards 78m passengers in 2011. In 2011, Sinead established affinnity, which assists tech businesses to perform and grow in Europe by doing business in the Aviation and Travel Sectors.
Leor Franks is Director of Business Development & Marketing at law firm Kingsley Napley and a member of the Management Board. He is a specialist in the professional services industry with over 20 years marketing, communications and BD experience. He was previously Chief Marketing Officer at legal services firm Augusta, Managing Director of Marketing Communications at FTI Consulting and in Marketing & BD Director roles at Deloitte and Ernst & Young (EY). Leor is Chair of industry body Managing Partners’ Forum Marketing & Strategy Committee and Chair of the Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhoods Canons Ward Panel.
Michael Hayman MBE
Michael Hayman is an entrepreneur, author, broadcaster and campaigner. He is a co-founder of Seven Hills, a London-based campaigning communication consultancy, and co-founder of StartUp Britain, the national initiative for early-stage enterprise launched by the UK’s former Prime Minister. Michael has served on a range of boards focusing on supporting enterprise, including as chairman of entrepreneurs at the private bank Coutts & Co, the advisory board of the National Business Awards, non-executive director of Creative Sheffield, chairing a task group for the Minister of State to build corporate support for Global Entrepreneurship Week, a non-executive director with the city of Westminster (Westco) and as a commissioner on the Finance Inquiry into The Future of Cities. He supported the Chartered Association of Business Schools to launch the Small Business Charter, and is an entrepreneurship fellow at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. Michael graduated from Queen Mary University of London with a BA (Hons) in Politics and History, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (Economics) degree from the University of London in 2016. He was awarded an MBE for services to enterprise promotion, entrepreneurship and education in 2014.
Dr Ulrike Hotopp
Ulrike Hotopp is a panel member of the Competition and Markets Authority, which takes independent decisions on mergers and competition cases in the UK. She is also a director of LIVE Economics Ltd, which provides independent economic advice, project appraisal and evaluation, and an honorary professor of government policy at the University of Kent. She was previously chief economist and director of analysis at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and senior economist in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), where her team included BIS’s Operational Research Unit. Other previous posts in government include deputy director in the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), chief economist at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), working in the Cabinet Office on Better Regulation, and as an economic advisor on labour market regulation in the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Professor Vanessa Knapp
Vanessa Knapp specialises in company law and corporate governance. She is a member of the EU expert group on company law and chairs the Company Law Committee of the Council of the Bars and Law Societies of the European Union. Most of her career was at Freshfields Bruckhaus Beringer LLP, where she was a partner and later principal consultant for 25 years. She is now a visiting professor in the Department of Law at Queen Mary University of London, a special advisor to the corporate governance committee of Save the Children Association/Save the Children International, and is a trustee of the London Symphony Chorus Endowment Fund. She was awarded an OBE for services to corporate law in 2007.
Ian Parkes is chief executive of the East London Business Alliance (ELBA). ELBA is a charity and membership organisation founded in 1989 to connect businesses and community partners in east London to tackle issues of social mobility and community wellbeing. Ian is also a director of London Works, a social business recruitment agency that reinvests its profits into employability initiatives across east London. Ian’s career spans the public, private and not for profit sectors, including serving as chief executive of AZTEC and founder of SOA Development. He was involved with Coast to Capital LEP and Greater Brighton City Region’s devolution bid. Ian is strongly committed to helping children and young people meet their full potential, and has served as chairman of governors at an inner London primary school and as senior governor at one of London’s largest secondary schools.
Payal Vasudeva is a seasoned talent practitioner and management consultant with experience in leadership roles for global organisations. Payal is passionate about the Future of HR and the changing workforce in the context of Digital. She is a strong advocate for inclusion and diversity in organisations, and society at large. She has served as the Trustee on the Board of ELBA, and been part of the Leadership Advisory Board on Gender for Business In The Community. Payal is also the founder of an education scholarship fund for underprivileged girls in India and is co-founding a not for profit to help youth from disadvantaged backgrounds build life and leadership skills. She has been recognised externally as Top 100 Ethnic Minority Leader by Empower & FT in 2017 & 2018, FT & HERoes Champions of Women in Business 2017 & 2018, Green Park Top 100 BAME Board Talent Index 2017, Top 10 Global Diversity Champion in 2015, 2016 & 2017 by the Global Diversity List. Payal holds a MSc in Industrial Relations & Personnel Management from the London School of Economics, and is a CIPD Fellow.
Dr Peter Young
Peter Young is founding director and former chair of the Aldersgate Group, an alliance of leaders from business, politics and civil society that drives action for a sustainable economy. Peter has spent his entire career since the late 1970s working on environmental issues, mainly in multi-disciplinary environmental management consulting. He has advised companies, public sector bodies, government departments and investors on the economic opportunities and strategies to meet environmental sustainability challenges. He regularly provides advice at ministerial level and has given evidence to House of Commons Committees. He has served on the joint BIS/DECC/Defra Green Economy Council, Defra's Regulatory Challenge Panel, the business-led Ecosystems Markets Task Force, and most recently contributed to the Clean Growth strand of the UK government’s Industrial Strategy. He is a trustee of The Wildlife Trusts and of the Green Purposes Company, which is responsible for safeguarding the green mission of the Green Investment Bank.
