Yan obtained a BSc degree in 2005 from the Statistics Department, Capital University of Economics and Business (Beijing, China). She also holds an MSc degree in Economics from University of Edinburgh (2006) and a PhD degree in Health Economics from University of Aberdeen (2010). Before joining Queen Mary University of London in 2018 as a Senior Lecturer, Yan worked as a Senior Economist at the Office of Health Economics (London, UK), and a Research Assistant at the Health Economics Research Unit, University of Aberdeen.

Yan's research interests include the patient reported outcome measures, health policy evaluation, pay-for-performance incentives in primary and secondary care, and applied micro-econometrics in health.
Yan is currently leading on a number of research projects as the Principal Investigators:
- Effectiveness and Value for Money of Prescribed Specialised Services Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) interventions 2016/17 to 2018/19. Funded by the Policy Research Programme, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
- Understanding the relationship between clinical quality of primary care and patients’ self-reported health on the EQ-5D in England. Funded by the EuroQol Research Foundation
