Dr Valentina Gallo, MD, LSHTM-MSc, PhD
Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology
Email: email@example.comTelephone: 020 7882 6135
Valentina was born in Rome (Italy) in 1975; she graduated in Medicine and Surgery and specialised in Clinical Neurology at 'la Sapienza' University of Rome. During the Med School years she experiences her first migration studying for one year at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (Spain) with the Erasmus interchange.
Once she got her clinical specialisation, after a short experience with Medicines Sans Frontieres (MSF), she moved to London where she already had studied a Master degree at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Here she worked at Imperial College London, with Prof Paolo Vineis and back at LSHTM with Dr Tony Fletcher before joining QMUL in October 2012.
Valentina now lives in North East London with her partner, their young daughter, and a restless black and white cat.
Valentina Gallo is a Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology, joining QMUL in October 2012. Valentina is a neuroepidemiologist with both clinical neurological qualification and epidemiological background. She graduated in Medicine in 2000 at 'la Sapienza' University of Rome, where she also obtained her clinical qualification as Neurologist in 2005. She attended the MSc in Demography and Health at LSHTM in 2003-04.
Before joining QMUL, Valentina worked as Research Associate at the School of Public Health, at Imperial College London collaborating closely with Professor Paolo Vineis on a number of projects; and as Clinical Lecturer in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) on the C8 Health Project with Dr Tony Fletcher and the other members of the team on the health effect of pefluorinated compound exposure.
Valentina's main fields of interests include neuroepidemiology (she is currently investigating risk factors for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease); environmental, molecular, and social epidemiology.
In June 2016 Valentina was awarded a major grant entitled "BRain health and healthy AgeING in retired Rugby players, the BRAIN study" by the Drake Foundation together with Prof Neil Pearce (LSHTM) and Dr Damien McElvenny (IoM).
Valentina teaches in the course of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Master Course in International Health, and she is an OCSE examiner.
She also teaches Molecular Epidemiology within the Environmental Epidemiology course at the London School f Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
She leads the BSc module Introduction to epidemiology & statistics
Neuroepidemiology (mainly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease); environmental, molecular, and social epidemiology.
Valentina is mainly interested in investigating environmental determinants of neurological diseases (dementia, Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, and others), and their interaction with other risk factors and genetic predisposition.
She is also interested in exploring the value of using biomarkers in epidemiological research, and in the theoretical work behind molecular epidemiological studies.
Finally, Valentina is also interested in contributing to the understanding of social determinants of health and diseases.
