Research Design Service

Research Design Service (RDS) London is an advice service funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) for people preparing grant applications to peer-reviewed funding competitions for applied health or social care research.

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of four centres around London sharing responsibility for the service, with other centres at King’s College LondonImperial College London and University College London.

Research Design Service London (RDS) London can advise on all aspects of preparing grant applications.

Researcher advisors at QMUL provide the service to researchers in the North East London area. Advisors come from throughout the medical school, although most are based in the  Centre for Primary Care and Public Health. RDS London supports researchers at all stages of preparing applications for submission to peer-reviewed UK-based funding bodies for applied and social care research. The funding bodies include NIHRWellcome TrustMRC and charities like Asthma UK.

When to contact us

Researchers who are at the initial stages of designing their study should contact the RDS team as early as possible, ideally 3-6 months before an intended submission date.  Researchers who have more developed proposals, can contact us at least 6-8 weeks before submission.  These timelines give us sufficient time to firstly provide an overall review of the study and then secondly, provide advice from specialist methodologists and further Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) as needed.

For formal applications for assistance, please visit our website at: and fill in a ‘support request form’. Please ensure you choose the ‘QMUL’ submission button.

QMUL also hold DROP-IN-CLINICS aimed at researchers in East London on the last Friday of the month from 12-2pm. If you have a few minutes and a research idea, feel free to come and speak to one of the team.
