Between October 1991-October 1992 I worked with Drs MD Jensen and JM Miles in Dr RA Rizza's Endocrine Research Unit of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, U.S.A. The research focussed on developing HPLC and isotope tracer methodology for kinetics of triglyceride, fatty acid and glycerol metabolism in adipose tissue and in circulating lipoproteins (especially triglyceride-rich lipoproteins). These methods have since been applied to studies of the control of lipolysis. During subsequent visits to the U.S.A. between 1993 and 2001, I visited Dr RR Wolfe (University of Texas Medical Center, Galveston) Dr S Klein (Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis) and Dr G Eisenhofer, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda as well as returning to the Mayo Clinic. These later transatlantic visits were used to study catecholamine kinetics and microdialysis of adipose tissue interstitial fluid.
