He qualified in Manchester, and completed clinical training in Scotland and the North West England before being appointed in London in 1995. His research interests include placental transport mechanisms, retinopathy of prematurity and the use of probiotics to prevent preterm labour and birth. Member of the Thames Regional Perinatal Group, Neonatal Society, and British Association of Perinatal Medicine.SummaryDr Husain and his colleagues working in the Neonatal Unit at Homerton Hospital provide a neonatal medical service. The Unit serves a high-risk population and has one of the highest throughputs of very low birth weight babies in the country. His early research was laboratory based; more recently this has changed direction to clinical studies involving preterm babies. Centre: Genomics and Child Health. Research Groups: Neonatal medicine.Teaching Member of the Human Development Medical Education Committee; Problem Based Learning facilitation and Child Health landscapes in Years 1 and 2; Neonatology workshop in Year4; OSCE examiner Teaching: . ResearchResearch Interests:Placental transport mechanisms; retinopathy of prematurity; prevention of spontaneous preterm labour and birth Recently completed projects have revolved around the fetal control of calcium transport across the placenta, and characterisation of the vaginal microflora in a multiethnic population. Ongoing research includes the development of an algorithm with the ability to predict severe retinopathy of prematurity before its onset. Projected research includes the use of probiotics to reduce the risk of preterm labour and birth.
