Donations from staff and students avoid waste and support vital research
The Pack for Good campaign gives students and staff the opportunity to donate unwanted items such as clothes, electricals, books and furniture to British Heart Foundation collection banks on campus and in the local community. We're delighted to announce that donations from Queen Mary staff and students raised £11,648 towards vital British Heart Foundation research between April and September 2021.
This equates to over 800 bags of donations. It also means that a significant amount of waste, 6.6 tonnes (the equivalent of an African Bush Elephant), has been avoided, stopping 67.74 kgs of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions being released into the atmosphere.
Queen Mary joined the BHF Pack for Good campaign in 2016 and we currently have three red BHF donation banks on the Mile End campus. We're also exploring opportunities to locate banks at our other London campuses.
The donated items — which would otherwise likely have ended up as waste — are taken to British Heart Foundation (BHF) charity shops, where they are sold on to make money. The money raised supports the lifesaving research and work of the BHF.
