Meet the Sustainability Team
4 December 2014
Over the last few months the Sustainability Team, Estates and Facilities Directorate, have double in sized and output!
After 3 months of getting our heads down and developing a number of plans and objectives we are now ready to introduce ourselves, where we come from and, more importantly, where QMUL is going.
Andrew Flett, Assistant Director Estates and Facilities (Sustainability)
As Assistant Director Estates and Facilities (Sustainability) I lead the team and am responsible for developing the university's environmental, energy and sustainability strategy. Previously, I was Head of Sustainability at WSP (one of the world’s largest engineering, design, energy and environmental consultancies). Prior to that I worked at Barclays PLC holding senior positions in lending and risk management, strategy, planning, audit and competitor insight. Between 2004 and 2008 I was Global Head of Environmental Sustainability & Climate Change. This involved developing and delivering their environmental and climate change strategy, major initiatives on energy reduction/efficiency, ‘green’ product development and the management of sustainability in the supply chain. I am a fully qualified primary school teacher and have undertaken a number of pedagogical research projects including ‘The impact of Philosophy for Children on the resilience and problem solving capacities of young people’.
Kerry Horvath, Energy Reduction Manager
As Energy Reduction Manager I address our energy consumption to identify ways to minimise the environmental impact. This also involves me addressing all areas of sustainability. After studying my MSC in Sustainable Environmental Management I worked in an environmental team at another London University before joining QMUL in 2013. Looking ahead I am implementing QMULs Carbon Management and Implementation Plan and embedding an ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 compliant Energy and Environmental Management System.
Jamal Mohammed, Sustainability Data Manager
As Sustainability Data Manager I manage all quantitative sustainability data for QMUL allowing for the accurate analysis of our utilities consumption and cost data. This ensures reliable and accurate data for compliance reporting. I’m also involved other areas of sustainability. I previously worked for international Internet Service Providers before moving over to the private education sector. I joined QMUL in 2011 and progressed to the Sustainability Team in 2013. I am currently working with the Projects Team, Geography and QMSU to deliver our first ever Green Roof.
Jessica Hawes, Sustainability Project Assistant
As Sustainability Project Assistant I lead on all student and staff engagement. This includes the internal management of Green Impact and Student Switch Off, and the running of campus events like Go Green Week. I joined the team in September 2014 after completing an MSc focussing on sustainable behaviour change. Over the next year I’m looking to grow the student population’s awareness of Sustainability at QMUL by enhancing our communications. I will also work to develop our Environmental Management System through my role as an ISO14001 Internal Auditor.
Holly Morris, Administrator (Sustainability, Property and Space Management)
As Administrator (Sustainability, Property and Space Management), I support the Sustainability Team and the Property & Space Management Team as well as being a part time PA to the Director of EAF which adds a lot of variety to my day! Before joining QMUL in 2014 I worked in various roles in Social Housing. Two ways I will be supporting the Sustainability Team this year are by auditing the Energy & Environmental Management System and helping run engagement events.
If you are interested in sustainability or have any thoughts on what we could do to improve sustainability at QMUL we encourage you to get in touch, email firstname.lastname@example.org, we look forward to hearing from you.
