The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) requires all institutions set a carbon reduction target for 2020 based on their emissions in 2005/6. To meet HEFCE's requirement, QMUL has a Carbon Management and Implementation Plan which commits to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2020 on a 2005/06 baseline for scope 1 and 2 emissions.
In order to continually improve our environmental performance QMUL is implementing an Energy and Environmental Management System which meets ISO 14001 and 50001 requirements.
These systems set out our operational commitments to ensuring ongoing legal compliance and help us embed sustainability throughout QMUL.
As an organisation which produces over 6000MWh per year of electricity, QMUL has also participated in the UK Government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment scheme since 2010.
