How to apply

How to apply for the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM) Programme

Please note that applications for the Erasmus+ Programme are not currently open for QMUL students who have begun their degree at QM. Full applications procedures and deadlines will be published in late October. Please check back at this time. Please do not submit your application prior to this information being published.

If you are a student applying for a degree at QMUL and would like to add the ‘with year abroad’ option to your programme, you can submit your application via the UCAS website.

You can apply to the Erasmus+ ICM scheme if:

  • you are a current QMUL student
  • your school or department has an exchange agreement with your proposed host institution
  • you meet your school or department’s Erasmus+ ICM criteria.

You may be able to change your degree programme to enable you to study abroad. You should speak to your Erasmus+ Coordinator for your academic school as early as possible if you are contemplating this course of action.

If you are applying for a degree with Year Abroad option, you should select this when submitting your application to UCAS. There is no need for you to reapply for the Year Abroad and you will receive full details of this from your home school.

To apply for the Erasmus+ ICM Programme, you need to first get in touch with your school or department’s Erasmus+ Coordinator.

The decision to accept you on to the programme is taken by your academic school and the application process is dealt with in different ways.

As every department and school has a different application process, it is vital that you discuss your application with your Erasmus+ Coordinator.

  • If you want to take part in the Erasmus+ programme, you should be in ‘good academic standing’ with your academic school: this means that you have met all of your academic obligations and are doing well on your degree programme.
  • You will be selected on the basis of this academic standing and an application consisting of an application form, a personal statement and an academic reference.
  • Consideration will also be given to your motivation, and the appropriateness of the available academic modules at your proposed host institution.
  • The Erasmus+ Programme is committed to widening participation and increasing the number of mobile students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Therefore in addition to the above criteria, the following criteria will also be considered in the selection process: disability, educational difficulties, economic obstacles, cultural differences, health problems, social obstacles and/or geographic obstacles.

Once you are selected by your school for the Erasmus+ programme, your contact details will be sent to the Erasmus+ Institutional Coordinator, who will get in touch with you directly. All communication about Erasmus+ will be sent to your QMUL email address.

Please consult with your academic school to find out their application deadline.

If you are applying to study at QMUL via UCAS and wish to apply for a year abroad as part of your degree, please follow the UCAS application deadlines.

We want all of our students to be able to enjoy the international opportunities we offer and get the most out of their study abroad placements.

If you think you might need additional support – of whatever kind – please let us know when you are considering your application, so that we can help you with your options. It is also a good idea to discuss what additional support you might need on your exchange placement with our Disability and Dyslexia Service.

If you think you will need any extra support on your placement, we strongly recommend that you discuss your application with us and plan ahead: depending on your host university, any adjustments you might need on your placement may take some time to arrange.

You will likely need to apply for a visa for your Erasmus+ study placement based on your country of destination. Please contact us on erasmus@qmul.ac.uk so we can put you in touch with the relevant staff and provide guidance.
