Primary Programmes

Research shows that particular approaches towards Widening Participation are most effective. We attempt to embed these within the work that we do and so introduce primary school students to the concept of university from an early age.

Our aim is to normalise the idea of going to university, particularly for children who have no family history of higher education. Below are two programmes available for local feeder schools to book.    


Graduation Teddy belongs to the Students' Union

Year 5 Introduce University

One hour workshop including group discussion, quizzes and interactive activitites delivered in schools.

Group size: 30 students (max).

Year 6 Scout visit

Three hour visit to QMUL introducing the university environment through interactive challenges and a campus trail. The visit is designed to help classes prepare for their move to secondary school.

Group size: 30 students up to two classes per day.

The below reading and coding programmes link to current education related discussion in the media and complement changes in the curriculum and schools reading targets.

Year 5 Coding club  

Children learn to code through designing and making web games one hour after school for ten weeks.

Access to a PC lab at the school is required.

Children take home work books and continue their learning at home.

Year 6 Reading challenge

Children are paired with an undergraduate student ambassador from QMUL either 1-2-1 or 1-2-2 for one hour of reading per week for ten weeks.

Together they make their way through 'Danny Champion of the World'.

Year 6 Experience University Week: Languages

City, University of London logoIn collaboration with City University.

Provisional dates: 2 - 6 July 2018.

Free, non-residential week experiencing life at 2 universities. 30 children from a mix of primary schools take part.

Week includes:

  • Learning phrases in a new language
  • Discovering different subjects and careers
  • Meeting other children from local school
