2012 spring and summer school programme
Our spring and summer schools are open to students from schools in targeted boroughs across London, and they aim to give students a chance to have an in-depth experience of Queen Mary, University of London. Summer schools typically last a week, with students taking part in a wide range of classes, workshops, field trips and other activities as an introduction to learning and teaching methods at university. They face new challenges and learn about the social side of university life. Summer schools are supported by our trained team of student ambassadors - current undergraduate and postgraduate students who provide first-hand advice and guidance about courses, progression routes and what studying at university is really like.
Our summer schools are aimed at young people with little or no family history of progression to university, or who come from other groups that are under-represented in higher education.
In 2012 we will offer the following spring and summer schools:
Year 12 Health Professions Summer School (in partnership with City University)
9 July to 13 July 2012
This summer school will be jointly delivered by City University London and Queen Mary, University of London. Students will attend taster sessions in four different health-related subjects at each of these universities.
Students will:
- attend subject taster sessions in Radiography, Optometry, Medical Engineering and Biomedical Science – these will cover both theory and practical.
- work in small groups on a team presentation, researching a particular health career. Current university students will assist with this, using the universities’ extensive IT facilities. Prizes will be awarded for the best presentation.
- take part in a health careers session lead by a qualified careers advisor.
The summer school will conclude with a ‘graduation ceremony’ where students will receive a certificate from a university dignitary. Guests are welcome to attend this event.

Year 12 STEM Spring School

This four day spring school covers STEM subjects (engineering, materials, physics, mathematics and computer science) with a focus on the production, development and use of different kinds of energy.
Students attend a mixture of lectures, demonstrations and workshops from science and engineering academics to find out about current work in the field, and pathways of study at university. Students complete a project based around a problem-solving activity in groups, and report on this to their peers.
Students receive careers advice and information on progression pathways. They also hear about university life first-hand from a team of current undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Year 9 Humanities Summer School
4 June 2012 to 7 June 2012
This summer school uses London’s hosting of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to encourage students to develop and explore ideas of the history and changing nature of place, the built environment and sustainable development.
The Olympics always has a profound and lasting impact on its host site, acting as a catalyst for change. Taking this as its focus, students on this summer school will:
- attend a number of interactive workshops and taster sessions looking at different aspects of the games and their impact on the world around us – the historic, geographic and economic implications and legacies.
- conduct group work and site visits to build on their learning in school and develop a deeper understanding of these subjects and issues.
