Curriculum support activities

We offer a range of subject-based activities to help raise attainment in Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students. These include:

2012 Advanced Masterclass Programme

The 2012 Advanced Masterclass Programme is open to Year 12 students from Queen Mary's partner schools and colleges. Subjects offered include biology/chemistry, economics, English, geography, history, law, and medicine and related subjects. Students attend four classes at Queen Mary's Mile End campus between April and November 2012.

The Masterclass Programme will:
• provide students with an introduction to university life – they will meet current Queen Mary undergraduate students and be able to use College facilities such as lecture theatres and libraries
• develop students’ research and presentation skills (students will undertake research work and will be asked to deliver at least one presentation)
• enrich students’ studies at school/college, stretching them beyond the curriculum and giving them the chance to see what university-level study is like.

Physics Practical School

A-level students measure the speed of sound at Queen Mary's Physics Practical School
A-level students measure the speed of sound at Queen Mary's Physics Practical School

The Physics Practical School gives Year 12 students the opportunity to carry out open-ended investigations using equipment not normally available in school and college laboratories. The students are given an outline of the task and some background information, and then left to design their own approach.

The sessions are very 'hands-on' and are aimed at A2 students working in groups of two on each experiment, solving practical problems of experimental design and data collection.
