Head of Education Liaison
Hello. As Head of Education Liaison, I plan the Office's strategy for promoting the College within the UK in order to ensure that our student recruitment targets are met. This includes our annual programme of schools liaison and promotional activities such as talks to students, open days and events for teachers.
In addition to this, I oversee the College’s UK postgraduate recruitment strategy which involves promoting our postgraduate courses within the UK through advertising, running annual postgraduate open evenings and representing the college at postgraduate recruitment fairs around the country.
I am also responsible for co-ordinating the College’s Mentoring Programme which involves Queen Mary students working as mentors on a one-to-one or small group basis with pupils in local schools and colleges to help raise their levels of achievement.
I edit our newsletter for teachers and careers staff, OnQ, which we mail to schools, colleges and careers offices five times a year, as well as our annual Parents’ Guide to HE and biennial Teachers’ Guide to HE, all of which are available to download as
PDF documents. Please email me if you would like to be added to our database to receive paper copies.
I regularly visit schools and colleges to give talks to prospective students and their parents on higher education. If you want more information on any of these activities, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Widening Participation team
Head of Outreach and Widening Participation
Hello, I’m Anne Setright, and I am the Head of Outreach and Widening Participation. I am responsible for planning Queen Mary’s Widening Participation strategy, and for ensuring that the College meets its responsibilities under its Access Agreement with the Office for Fair Access. The Widening Participation team plan and deliver a comprehensive programme of outreach activities aimed at recruiting students from groups currently under-represented in higher education. Our projects include summer schools, masterclass programmes, revision classes and a primary and secondary school visit programme.
As Head of Widening Participation, I represent the College on the Management Boards of a number of external partnerships across London and the Thames Gateway. I am also responsible for the overall management of the London East Thames Gateway Aimhigher and London Excellence Hub teams. These externally funded projects are both based at Queen Mary, and offer an extensive range of widening participation activities to young people in east London, and to gifted and talented learners across the whole of the London area.
If you would like to find out more about Queen Mary’s Widening Participation strategy, or our outreach programme, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Peer Mentoring Coordinator
I'm Debbie Andrews, Peer Mentoring Coordinator in the Widening Participation team. Our main mentoring scheme is PASS at Queen Mary. PASS – Peer Assisted Study Support – is run in partnership between Widening Participation and academic departments, led by students and scaffolded by staff. It is a course-based mentoring scheme where more experienced undergraduate mentors help first-years settle in to higher education. If you are interested in setting up the scheme in your department at Queen Mary, or want to know if it is running already, please feel free to contact me. The mentors and I are always interested in working with other universities and organisations on mentoring events and the exchange of ideas, so I also welcome emails from external contacts and my own peers in the field.

Widening Participation and Outreach Officer
I am Michael Bennett, Widening Participation and Outreach Officer. I put together and run various projects with targeted schools and colleges from across London. These are designed to engage school and college students with Queen Mary, give them a chance to find out more about student life, and equip them with knowledge and experience that can help them plan for the future.
I am responsible for running the central summer school programme. This includes two health summer schools (for Year 12 students), two STEM subject summer schools (for Year 10 and Year 12 students) and a humanities summer school for Year 9 students. I also organise campus visits, masterclasses in a range of subjects and an evening revision programme for A-level students. In addition, I recruit and train our team of student ambassadors, who provide essential support for all our events.
If you are a school or college teacher, student or parent and would like to find out more about any of these projects, please do get in touch with me.
