Our international partnerships

In today’s interconnected global economy, it is not only commerce and industry that benefit from international collaborations – universities too are establishing new partnerships, sharing knowledge and experience across national borders and between institutions.

Queen Mary is involved in a number of international collaborations:

We contribute to the University of London International Programme
We offer programmes through the University of London Institute in Paris
We run a set of joint programmes in telecommunications and networks with the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT).

Against a background of economic uncertainty in Europe, and growth in east Asia, developing economies and the Middle East, Queen Mary is strategically committed to extending this network of partnerships. In particular, we want to support our students to develop cultural awareness, so that they can pursue careers that are becoming ever more international in character.

Our vision for the future is international partnerships based on true equality, enabling collaborative research and teaching, and helping to foster mutual understanding.

Study telecommunications in China with BUPT and Queen Mary

In 2004, Queen Mary teamed up with the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) to offer an innovative set of jointly run degree programmes in telecommunications, systems and networks. The partnership is genuinely equal – students graduate with a degree from BUPT and the University of London, and teaching is split 50/50 between the universities.

The programmes draw on the academic expertise of both institutions, as well as the strengths of two distinct educational cultures – the mathematical and scientific rigour found in China and the emphasis placed on creative problem-solving and transferable skills in the UK. Students graduate with a unique blend of skills, valued in China and around the world.

Why study on the joint programmes?

If you are planning to work in the field of communications, systems and networks, these joint programmes represent an incredible opportunity. The international nature of the telecommunications industry, and the size and influence of China, means that employers everywhere will value your knowledge and understanding of local conditions.

The programmes cover more ground than a standard UK engineering degree. You will be able to undertake practical work in a state-of-the-art technical training centre and a personal development programme will develop your creative and communication skills. Legal and business modules will supplement your technical education.

All teaching takes place at BUPT in English, with Queen Mary “flying professors” travelling to Beijing to give lectures face-to-face. In between teaching blocks, when Queen Mary staff are not in China, there are facilities for online tutorials, and video/audio/text conferencing.

Originally only open to Chinese students, the programmes are now open to students from the UK and around the world.

About BUPT

Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) is renowned around the world for its excellent teaching and research in the field of information and telecommunications, with multidisciplinary combinations with management, humanities and sciences.

Established in 1955, BUPT has consistently been ranked among the top universities in China for IT and related subjects, and has officially been designated a ‘Key University’ by the Ministry of Education – a privilege conferred only to China’s top 100 institutions.

Currently, BUPT has over 16,200 full-time students and 12,000 long-distance and e-learning students. Among full-time students there are 10,800 undergraduate students, 4,650 masters students and 805 doctoral students.

Location

BUPT is located in the north-west of China's capital city Beijing, in the Haidian District, an area home to a number of prestigious universities. The campus overlooks Tucheng Park, the ruins of ancient Yuan Dynasty city walls, and the scenic Xiaoyue River. It is a quiet, comfortable environment, with good transport links to the city’s centre.
