Your application

Q: How do I submit my documents to support my application?

Once you have filled in the online application form, please send the supporting documents to summerprogrammes@qmul.ac.uk, putting your name in the subject line of your email.

If you do not wish to take the summer school for academic credit you will need to send:

• A short personal statement (no more than 750 words) describing why you want to take part in the summer school, and what you hope to gain from the experience;

AND

• A CV detailing your professional experience and prior education.

OR if you do wish to take the summer school for academic credit you will need to send:

• Your most recent academic transcript;

AND

• An academic reference.

If your first language is not English, you must provide also evidence of your English language proficiency, for example an IELTS or TOEFL certificate. For this course we expect an IELTS (or equivalent) score of 7.5. The personal statement that you submit as part of your online application will be used to assess your language ability, and if you wish you can supply a reference from an academic member to confirm your proficiency. You should email your certificate and reference if required to summer-shakespeare@qmul.ac.uk, putting your name in the subject line of your email.

Your application will then be reviewed and, if we offer you a place, you will need to respond within 7 days (for more information on the application process see Application Deadlines).

Q: My University doesn’t release official transcripts by the application deadline what should I do?

You should ask your academic referee to list your most recent module results in their reference, and send the transcript to summerprogrammes@qmul.ac.uk as soon as it is available.

Q: My University is a QMUL Partner – do I apply in the same way?

Yes – you’ll need to apply online and send the relevant supporting documents by email.

Q:  My home University isn’t a QMUL Partner – can I apply?

Of course! Please ensure you meet the entry requirements for the programme.

Q:  I am having problems with the online application form – can I email you the information?

If you encounter problems with the form, please email us on summerprogrammes@qmul.ac.uk

Q:  I’ve never studied theatre/drama before, but I am really interested! Can I apply?

Of course! The directors will assess each application in terms of the extent to which the applicant has articulated their interest in the academic principles of the course and their reasons for applying

If you’re fascinated by Shakespeare’s plays in performance and the context surrounding the texts that’s all we need to see. Just make sure you keep this in mind when you make your application and tailor your personal statement accordingly.

Q:  Who can I get a reference from? Does it need to be academic?

If you wish to take the summer school for credit, as well as completing the online application form you’ll need to submit an academic reference to summer-shakespeare@qmul.ac.uk. This can be from a module leader, a personal tutor, or any other member of academic staff at your institution who can comment on your suitability for the programme. The same applies for references concerning language proficiency.

Q: Can I get help from my home institution to apply?

You are welcome to seek advice on your application, but do feel free to contact us on summer-shakespeare@qmul.ac.uk for guidance and support. If your institution has a Study Abroad Office they may be able to provide guidance when applying for summer programmes.

Q: Which English language qualifications do you accept?

If your first language is not English, you must provide evidence of your English language proficiency. For this course we expect an IELTS score of 7.5 The personal statement that you submit as part of your online application also will be used to assess your language ability, and if you wish you can supply an reference (by email, to summer-shakespeare@qmul.ac.uk) from an academic member of staff to confirm your proficiency.

Q: I don’t have an English language qualification yet – can I still apply?

Yes, but remember that all applicants will need to be proficient in written and spoken English. The personal statement that you submit as part of your online application will be used to assess your language ability, and if you wish you can supply a reference (by email, to summer-shakespeare@qmul.ac.uk) from an academic member of staff to confirm your proficiency.

Q: Do I need to have obtained a certain GPA in my second year to be eligible to apply?

If you wish to take the summer school for credit you will need to submit your most recent academic transcript, which will be read alongside the personal statement that you submit as part of the online application. The Programme

Q; Can I change from with-credit to without-credit during the programme?

No – you will make your choice on your application form, and that decision is final. We’d be happy to discuss the differences between the with-credit and without-credit options with you before you apply so that you can be completely happy with your decision.

Q: What will be the age range/background of students on the course?

It will be varied; the course is designed to appeal to actors, aspiring actors, and students of Shakespeare of all ages and backgrounds. We also welcome applications from overseas applicants and hope that the programme will have students from different nationalities.

Q: I’ve never studied in the UK, will I cope with the programme?

You will be taught in English, so you need to be confident in your use of written and spoken English. The teaching will take place in the heart of London, which is a great opportunity to see the capital city – but you should be prepared for the surroundings to be busy and noisy!

Q: Is the programme suitable for international students?

Yes – students from all backgrounds are welcome but you will be taught in English, so you need to be confident in your use of written and spoken English.

Q: When will I get my transcript and results?

You will receive written feedback on your reflective journal on the final day of your course, and the transcript will be sent to you after the end of course. There will be a delay in receiving your transcript because your assessment has to be moderated by an Exam Board.

Q: Will there be social activities included in the evening and on weekends?

We will provide a list of activities you can take part in whilst on the summer school – it’s the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death this year so there are lots of events happening in London for you to choose from. Please note that these activities will incur an extra cost and are not included in the programme.

Q: Where will I be living?

You will be living at the Mile End campus of Queen Mary University of London in student accommodation.

Q: Do you offer collection from the airport?

No, but we are happy to advise you on how to travel to QMUL from the airport.

Q: What do I need to bring with me to enrol?

You will need to bring your passport and visa, if necessary.

Q: How much spending money will I need?

It depends on how many activities you want to do outside of the course, and where you want to eat. Take a look at our guide to the cost of living in London, but please also bear in mind that you’ll need to take into consideration any additional travel or other activities you’d like to undertake whilst you’re in London.
