Where can I access PCs?

An extensive network of PCs is made available for students in several rooms on each of the College campuses. For more information, including where to find PCs, how to access them, what software they are installed with and advice on printing, please refer to the Student Service PC User Fact Sheet. There is also a live PC availability page, which will give you up-to-the-minute information on the number of PCs available to use in each area.

College Wi-Fi and internet on campus and in halls

You can access the internet around the College by either signing in to one of the PCs available in various locations on campus, by connecting your own computer to one of the network points in halls of residence, or via the College's Wi-Fi network. For full details on each of these methods, please refer to the Connecting To The College Networks page.

What is QMplus?

QMplus is Queen Mary's new Online Learning Environment (OLE) and is used by lecturers for tasks including:

  • publishing programme materials
  • running online learning activities
  • hosting discussions
  • making announcements
  • hosting podcasts and videos of lectures
  • collecting online submission of work
  • running assessments
  • collecting online feedback
  • publishing provisional grades.

Not all lecturers use QMplus. However, if your lecturer does use QMplus for some or all of the above purposes, it is likely to play an important role in your learning at Queen Mary and you should try to login each day to ensure you don't miss out on anything.

You will be provided with further information as the launch date of 14 September approaches.

What about Blackboard? Courses within Undergraduate Medicine (MBBS) in the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry will still be using Blackboard, the old OLE platform, during the 2012/13 academic year. Students within this programme should log into Blackboard from the E-Learning Website, using the same username and password used to access email and other electronic services.

For support in using either QMplus or Blackboard, please submit queries via the IT Services online helpdesk

What is Q-Review?

Q-Review is a lecture capture service that records and distributes teaching videos and audio files to students via QMplus and directly to mobile players. We’ve just expanded and updated the service and it is now installed in 44 key lecture theatres around all QM campuses (this means more recordings for students!).

A recording looks like this:

Example of a Q-Review recording

Lecturers at QM can use Q-Review to:

  • Record lectures
  • Create revision materials for students
  • Pre-record videos of teaching to free up face-to-face time for discussions and seminars
  • Record supplementary materials for their students (eg extra topics or exam revision)
  • Build knowledge repositories of bite-size videos on key topics.

What does this mean for you? Students can:

  • go back and listen to lectures again if they don’t understand a point
  • listen to recordings in their own time
  • make more thorough notes by pausing and playing them
  • catch up on any missed lectures
  • refresh their memories during exam time.

Printing, photocopying and scanning

Printers are located in all Student Service computer labs and the Libraries. Print jobs sent from Student Service PC’s and wirelessly from laptop devices can be released at any Student Service printer or Library photocopier. Once you hit print you have 24 hours to visit a printer that’s convenient for you, swipe your college ID card and confirm which jobs you’d like to collect. If you have forgotten your ID card print jobs can be released by entering your username and password at your chosen print device.

There are photocopiers for student use in all the Libraries. These can be used to photocopy, scan and collect print jobs sent from Student Service PC’s and wirelessly from laptop devices. Scanning at Library copiers is free but you do need to have balance, of at least 4p, on your account to successfully login. You will need a USB memory stick to save your scanned documents and images.

Printing and photocopying is paid for using your QM iPay account which is linked to your College ID card, similar to TfL’s Oyster scheme. New students receive a complementary £4.00 of credit. Your account can topped-up online or at kiosks located in each of the Libraries. Your QM iPay account is also used to pay for Library fines.

Charges for printing, photocopying and wireless print:
