Students outside Students' Union
Queen Mary is unique in being a compact campus university in the centre of the capital - and one of the very few city-based campus universities in the UK. Our students have the best of both worlds, on the one hand, experiencing life in one of the great global cities, and on the other, benefiting from the convenience of living on-campus. The brand new Student Village adds another thousand study bedrooms to the existing halls at Mile End, and will mean that Queen Mary's students are only five minutes from their bed to their first lecture of the day.
Living on campus is incredibly convenient: everything is nearby, the distances are short and you'll soon get to know your way around. Cafés and bars, library and computer suites, lecture theatres and classrooms, gym and squash courts... all the facilities you'll need are within a few minutes' walk. The Student Village provides a shop, launderette, café and common room, plus 24-hour security, making for a real community feel - and a place where you'll feel at home right from the start of your time at university.
Casual/part-time work
With increasing financial constraints facing students these days, many will seek casual or part-time work. Queen Mary is able to help through the offer of various types of employment - from assisting with conferences to working in our bars, cafés and restaurants - for students of all years and subject disciplines. Rates of pay are competitive with other local employers, and parents and students can rest assured that they will not be exposed to unsafe conditions, unreasonable hours or an unpleasant working environment.
Queen Mary is fortunate to have a truly multicultural student population, reflecting the diverse ethnic mix of east London and welcoming international students from over 100 countries. There are many different faith communities and places of worship near the Mile End campus, including all kinds of churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and a Buddhist prayer centre.
The College encourages religious understanding and co-operation, and every effort is made to meet the practical needs of students whatever their religious background. The Students' Union includes many active student-led religious societies, and provides two Muslim prayer rooms, both equipped with washing facilities, within the Students Union building.
St Benet's is the College chaplaincy, a work-place church based in its own building, with a modern chapel, meeting rooms and a full-time chaplain. St Benet's is Christian and ecumenical but is available to all students and staff at Queen Mary regardless of belief. Discussion groups and social events are held as well as regular weekly services.

The College Health Centre is open from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Registered nurses are available to help with minor treatment and injuries. Information about other health services such as dentists, opticians and family planning is also available at the Health Centre.
A local general practice provides GP services on site every morning during term-time. At other times (including the vacation) the GPs can be contacted via their main surgery premises. The practice offers a full range of general medical services including contraception and immunisation advice. It is essential that you register with a GP early in the first term and preferably before you need the doctor's services. The GP practice at the College Health Centre will register any student resident in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and, where necessary, is able to provide immediate treatment to others.
International students attending courses lasting six months or more are entitled to free treatment under the UK's National Health Service. If you are attending courses of fewer than six months you have limited entitlement and it is essential that you arrange adequate insurance before leaving your home country. Regulations for countries classed as 'international', and other rules, are constantly under review. The College's Advice and Counselling Service will be able to provide up-to-date advice on eligibility. The GPs who attend the College Health Centre are willing to provide services to all overseas students resident in Tower Hamlets. Registration early in the course is essential.
The Nursery at Queen Mary is available to the children of staff and students. All staff are fully qualified and experienced in all childcare matters. The Nursery is housed in a new purpose-built building and has 62 places available for children aged three months to five years. However, demand is high, especially for children under two, and it is important to apply early as there is a waiting list. The Nursery is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday throughout the year except for Bank Holidays and other days when the College is closed.

Queen Mary is widely renowned as a sporting College. The Students' Union building has a multigym, squash courts and a sports hall, saunas, with plans for a multi-gym and Dance Studio in the new Student Village. Supervised classes in fitness training, circuit training, weight training and aerobics are held regularly in term time. The multigym contains the latest weight training equipment which, for a small annual fee, you can use as often as you like.
Students run a wide range of sports clubs under the supervision of a full-time Sports Manager. Whether you play for fun or compete at intercollegiate level, as a club member you can enhance your skills, improve your general fitness and, of course, make friends and have a laugh.
