Teaching

As a student at Queen Mary you’ll soon find that we take teaching very seriously – and results of the National Student Survey illustrate how happy our students are with the standard of our teaching. You’ll find a range of teaching methods – not just lectures and classes. Depending on your subject, you might also find that you’re expected to work independently and as part of a group.

The modular system in place at Queen Mary allows you some flexibility in your choice of modules. Each year you will take 8 course units – 4 in each semester. You will find that there are some modules (‘core’ modules) which you are required to take for your degree course, but there will also be some which are recommended or suggested. Sometimes you will even be able to choose modules from other subject areas (especially in humanities courses), although this obviously depends on timetables and availability.

When choosing your modules, you will be guided by an adviser from your Department. You should bear in mind that modules you want to take in later years may have specific  pre-requisites (i.e you will have had to have taken certain modules in earlier years).

This modular system makes our degree courses very flexible and offers you a number of interesting options.
