The Centre for Public Engagement has a core team of five members of staff, including the Vice Principal for Public Engagement and Student Enterprise, Professor Peter McOwan. 

You can contact the CPE to discuss our services and as any ideas or projects to involve people outside higher education with Queen Mary University of London using the details below. 

You can also book a half hour slot at one of our fortnightly advice surgeries across the three QMUL campuses to discuss public engagement directly with members of the team.

Staff Members 


Peter McOwan


Professor Peter McOwan
Vice-Principal for Public Engagement and Student Enterprise

Peter is Professor of Computer Science at Queen Mary. His research interests are in visual perception, mathematical models for visual processing, in particular motion, cognitive science and biologically inspired hardware and software. 

Peter has a history of involvement with public engagement, and has worked with CS4FN, an outreach project to enthuse schools about computer science research for many years. He was awarded the 2011 IET Mountbatten Medal for his work in promoting Computer Science to diverse audiences.




Kimberley Freeman
Executive Officer for Public Engagement and Manager, Centre for Public Engagement

Kimberley Freeman is Executive Officer for Public Engagement, and Manager of the Centre for Public Engagement at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). Kimberley has worked in public engagement and science communication for the past eight years, having previously been Partnership Communications Manager at the Medical Research Council (MRC), Public Engagement Manager at UCL, based in UCL’s Public Engagement Unit, and Public Engagement and Publications Co-ordinator at The Royal College of Pathologists. 

Kimberley is also co-creator of the London Public Engagement Network (PEN), which provides professional networking and support for public engagement professionals in London, and the London SciComm Socials, which are designed to be fun, friendly meetups for everyone interested in science communication.


Sarah Barnes


Sarah Barnes
Public Engagement Manager

Sarah graduated from QMUL with a degree in physics and has a background in physics public engagement, having previously worked for the Institute of Physics and the University of Surrey where she looked after their public events and developed new activities. Prior to this Sarah was the Company & Stage Manager for an associate theatre company at the Roundhouse, Camden and has experience in theatre lighting as well as working at festivals and on tours. 

Sarah can also be found at the Science Museum most weekends, where she presents a range of shows and family events.



Sarah Gifford
Community Engagement Officer

After studying for a degree in Modern and Contemporary History at QMUL, Sarah worked within Queen Mary Students’ Union to develop the student volunteering programme (QMSU Volunteering) and other community engagement and student-led initiatives in East London. 

Sarah is now working on engaging the local community with the Life Sciences Initiative and its research.



Katherine McAlpine 250w

With a background in museum learning and interpretation, Katherine joined the Centre for Public Engagement in 2017.  

Katherine is responsible for the Centre's communications, providing advice and guidance to engagement projects, and developing methods to disseminate best practice. She is the first point of contact for general enquiries, managing small grants and Public Engagement Advice Surgeries
