Research excellence and innovation
We facilitate world-leading research across all academic schools and departments, with an impressive track record of initiating exciting and innovative interdisciplinary collaborations. The most recent national assessment of research – the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) – has confirmed our place in the very top group of research-led universities in the UK. Overall we were ranked 9th among multi-faculty universities in the UK. And in terms of the percentage of 3* and 4* research outputs – the best research papers and books – we were ranked 5th in the UK. Whether you join an existing research group as a PhD student or study for a taught masters programme, you will be joining a thriving research community supported by QMUL's Doctoral College.
Exceptional learning environment
We continually invest in our campuses to ensure that all our students have access to the most up-to-date teaching and research facilities. Major campus developments include the iconic Blizard Building, home to some of the largest open-plan laboratories in Europe, and our recently opened Dentistry Building, the UK’s first new dental school in forty years. Upcoming developments include the planned Life Sciences Building, which will play a key role in the regeneration of the wider Whitechapel area following the arrival of Crossrail.
Our new Graduate Centre offers 7,700sqm of learning and teaching space including a 200-seat lecture theatre, a landscaped courtyard, a student enterprise ‘hub’, and 24-hour work areas tailored specifically to the needs and working patterns of postgraduates. It is also the new home for the School of Economics and Finance.
Studentships and bursaries
Each year we offer a generous support package of scholarships, bursaries and studentships to newly-qualified postgraduate applicants. Last year, some 550 masters students benefited from scholarships. This year we will be making a similar investment to support the next generation of research students. Awards are available to both home and overseas students. We were founded in 1887 as the People’s Palace, a philanthropic project designed to bring culture, recreation and education to the east London. Students at the original People’s Palace Technical Schools excelled in their education, and helped to foster the academic excellence required for us to be permanently admitted to the University of London in 1915. Today, we remain committed to our principle of educating students regardless of background, and continue to dedicate both our teaching and research to the purpose of public good.
