Facilities and support

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is a campus-based university. Our five London campuses – Mile End, Charterhouse Square, Whitechapel, Lincoln's Inn Fields and West Smithfield – offer a wealth of facilities and support for research students.

At the Mile End campus we are in the process of building a multi-million pound Graduate Centre to provide more space and facilities for QMUL's growing community of graduate students. Once completed, the new centre will include a 200-seat lecture theatre, seminar rooms, reception area with terrace, student enterprise 'hub', landscaped courtyard and office space over 7,700 square metres. As well as providing a work-base for taught and research students, the building will provide ample space for socialising and interaction amongst students, encouraging idea generation and collaboration and offer 24-hour work areas tailored specifically to the needs and working patterns of postgraduates.

Specialist facilities

Researchers make use of a variety of facilities and resources at Queen Mary – ranging from specialist labs, computing facilities, studios to editing suites and workspaces to name a few. Further details can be found on our research facilities pages. In December 2014 Queen Mary was awarded £5Million by HEFCE which will be matched by the university to provide a £10million investment in our lab space allowing us to provide even more cutting edge research and teaching space.

In addition, our location allows easy access to The British Library, The Wellcome Library and other valuable resources for researchers.

On-campus facilities

On the Mile End campus you will find Drapers Bar and Kitchen (the Students' Union bar), QMotion (the university's gym) and two on-campus shops. Hot food is available from The Curve, while Ground offers students a quick caffeine and cake fix!

You will also find The Queen Mary Nursery – open 48 weeks of the year – for children of staff and students aged between three months and five years. There is also accommodation available on the Mile End campus for some postgraduate students.

The Whitechapel campus is home to the Griff Inn Bar and Kitchen and the BSLA Box Office, which sells event tickets, merchandise and club and society membership. The Shield café can be found on the Charterhouse Square Campus. There are also numerous places to eat in and around the three campuses.

Student support

In addition to the facilities provided across our campuses, QMUL provides a range of student support services such as our Advice and Counselling service (ranked first in the Russell Group), the Disability and Dyslexia Unit, and a Mental Health Coordinator. During term time there is also a Student Health Centre at Mile End should you need to see a doctor or nurse.

Students of all faiths are provided for at Queen Mary and our Mile End Campus has a Multi-Faith Prayer Room and Chaplaincy services. Find out more about faith provision at QMUL.

With over 25,000 students and staff on its campuses in London, Queen Mary University of London is proud of its diverse multicultural population and is committed to encouraging religious understanding, freedom of speech and open social interaction.

The beliefs that people have matter to us. Our Chaplaincy offers confidential support to all students regardless of faith or outlook. Last year, QMUL students visited the chaplaincy for events like: Unite Gospel Choir concerts, student society events, cooking classes (scone making), QMUL drama students’ performances, as well as our weekly meditation sessions.

Within the Mile End campus, a short walk can take you to a Multi-Faith Centre (Students’ Union Hub), contemplation rooms within our Library (with 24/7 opening) or a grade II listed Christian chapel (St Benet’s) open to all. The Octagon – a beautiful venue located in the Grade II listed Queens' Building - is used not only for music events but also for Friday prayers. Find out more about Faith at Queen Mary or on our Facebook page.
