Welcome to the Graduate School in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary, University of London

The Graduate School stands at the heart of Queen Mary’s mission as a college.  It is a place where scholarship and innovation coincide, where ideas are scrutinized and theories developed, and where new researchers and professionals are mentored.  Graduate study is a demanding, exhilarating and, frequently, life-changing experience.  For over a century, Queen Mary has prepared men and women for rewarding careers in many traditional, innovative and evolving disciplines.  Today, more than 1,300 students from around the world undertake graduate work in the humanities and social sciences at Queen Mary.

We offer advanced degrees in a wide range of disciplines, from Film Studies to Business Management and from English literature to commercial law.  Doctoral education emphasizes original and independent scholarship, while master’s degree courses prepare students for careers in professional life or further study.  These programmes share a number of distinctive features: a high level of engagement between distinguished academics and outstanding students, a campus environment that fosters a community of scholars, a commitment to financial support—more than £1 million annually—that allows concentration on research, and degree programmes with demonstrable success in educating graduates for careers in academia, government and the non-profit and corporate sectors, both in the UK and abroad.

The chief ingredient of our success with graduate students is the excellence our research.  Indeed, many of you will come here to study because of the high reputation of individual academics in your field.  Queen Mary’s outstanding performance in the 2008 RAE confirms its position in the top tier of research-led British universities, ranking 11th in the Guardian league table.  We are proud of our research excellence because it means that we can offer you the ideal setting for your graduate study: a world-class faculty working on the frontiers of knowledge, high-quality instruction and personal supervision, and a supportive community in which you can thrive.

You will find on this website an evolving reflection of the impressive range of Queen Mary’s graduate programmes and the outstanding services, activities and opportunities that enhance the graduate student experience.  We encourage you to explore it.Richard Schoch

All of us in the Graduate School wish you good fortune as you pursue an advanced degree.
