Research Student Induction

The Research Student Induction took place on Wednesday 5 - Thursday 6 October 2011 between 9.30am-5.30pm at Charterhouse Square campus.

This event was designed to formally welcome new research students to the College and the University, to provide an overview of the College's many strengths and the opportunities it offers. Queen Mary has made a strategic commitment to achieving the highest quality of research and it is an exciting time in its development.

The Induction programme was also designed to increase new students' awareness of the range of development and support services available to them during their research as well as giving them the opportunity to meet some of their fellow students and College staff in an informal setting.

If you have recently started your research degree here, but haven’t attended a college induction, there will be another chance to attend later in the year. Please contact Jo Cordy to find out more details.

This year we recorded the first day of the induction programme via our lecture capture system, known as Q-Review.  Please see the links below to view the recordings:

EU Researchers' Night

Queen Mary, University of London is pleased to be participating in the 2011 EU Researchers Night.

Researchers' Night is a Europe-wide event bringing together the public and researchers once a year on the fourth Friday of September to celebrate research and show how it helps improve people's lives.

This year it takes place on Friday 23 September 2011 and events will take place simultaneously in 500 different venues in over 30 countries.  Queen Mary University of London is only one of four institutions in the UK who will be hosting a Researchers' Night.

Researchers' Night is an ideal opportunity to explore research facilities that are usually not open to the public, to try out state-of-the-art technology, to participate in experiments and to exchange ideas with researchers.

The other UK venues celebrating Researchers' Night in the UK are the University of Huddersfield, the Natural History Museum, and The University of Reading.

For further information please see the Invitations into Researchers' Night website.

The Learning Institute

The Learning Institute has a dedicated Postgraduate Research Students section on their website.  Here you will find information about training and development opportunities within the Learning Institute, in other departments within the College and outside Queen Mary.  There are also resources for students with teaching responsibilities, and information and documents to help you with Personal and Development Planning.  For more information please see the Learning Institute website.

Research Degrees Office

The Research Degrees Office (RDO) is the main College administrative office for research degree students.  They are responsible for maintaining your main College record and making sure it reflects your current status and progress through your degree.  They administer the examinations for research degrees and you will submit your thesis to them at the end of your programme.  For students who are funded through the College, they manage and arrange your quarterly payments.

The RDO is also responsible for developing Queen Mary’s policies relating to research degrees and students.  The key documents that frame your formal relationship with Queen Mary are the Academic Regulations and Code of Practice for Research Degree Programmes.  Other relevant policies are available on the RDO web pages.

The RDO main office is in E15, ground floor, Queen’s Building, Mile End Campus.   Full details of the services offered, opening times and who to contact with specific queries are available on our own web pages.

Senior Common Room (SCR)

The Senior Common Room (SCR) can be used by all members of staff and postgraduate research students.  It includes a coffee lounge and staff bar.  The lounge is located on the first floor and the bar on the second floor of the Queen's Building, Mile End Campus.

The lounge is open between 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.  Morning and lunchtime coffee is available from 9.30am until 2.15pm and tea from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.  A selection of sandwiches, cakes, snacks and soft drinks are on sale in the lounge.

The bar is open throughout the day from 9.30am to allow for meetings.  During lunchtimes (12-2pm) a pantry service operates, selling freshly prepared sandwiches and hot meals.  Seating is also available for staff/research students wishing to bring their own food.  The evening service hours are 5-11pm and the bar offers a wide range of drinks and snacks including a fine selection of wines.
