Module registration - new students
Module registration is the process through which students sign up to modules of study. Students must complete module registration or they will not be entitled to attend lectures and will not be entered for assessment on the modules in question. Students should also note that they will not have access to the Queen Mary Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for a module until they have completed online module registration. Module registration is completed online through MySIS, the online Student Information System portal.
Timescales
Module Registration opens on 24 August 2011 and is available on completion of pre-enrolment. Students will receive an email about module registration to their registered Queen Mary accounts prior to the start of the academic year from which they will be advised to follow the link, log-in to the MySIS homepage with their normal Queen Mary usernames and passwords, and select ‘Module Registration’ from the MySIS menu.
However, some Schools/Departments (including Biological and Chemical Sciences, Geography and the Science & Engineering Foundation Programme) ask new students to wait until after their induction briefings in Welcome Week, before undertaking module registration. These Schools will have contacted you separately to inform you of this.
The deadline for completion of module registration is 9 October 2011. The online form should be completed and submitted for approval by your adviser or departmental administrator. If you fail to complete online module registration by 9 October 2011 your adviser will be forced to act on your behalf and make a selection of modules according to places available. Please be aware that once selected these modules will not be changed!
Please note some programmes, specifically Masters in Law and Postgraduate Diploma Law, will not have access to module registration until after enrolment and induction activities and other programmes such as the first year Law students and Electronic Engineering students across all study years since the modules for these programmes are pre-determined. For these programmes you will be automatically registered for your modules and able to view them via MySIS.
Module Registration – The Process
During ‘Module Registration’ students must make preliminary selections for the modules that they wish to study in the 2011/12 academic year. Some modules are required for certain programmes of study, and are known as ‘core’ or ‘compulsory’ modules. These will be selected automatically, and cannot be changed.
When registering for your modules you will see that your selection is limited to a range of modules appropriate to your programme of study. The extent to which this is limited often depends of the nature of the programme, i.e. programmes in arts often have a greater choice of modules than in science and engineering.
Many programmes allow students at least some choice in the modules that they take. These optional modules are called ‘electives’, and like all modules carry an academic credit weighting. Each programme of study requires students to take a fixed number of academic credits each year, and students must select electives to take them up to the required credit amount (the total amount and individual module credit values will be displayed in MySIS). Some modules have higher credit values than others, so students should note that they may take a different number of modules depending on the relevant credits values.
Instructions tailored to individual programmes of study will appear in MySIS explaining how to make these choices. Modules can be selected by clicking on them, and once all of the rules, including the total credit value, have been met students can click ‘Confirm’ to finalise their choices. If there is a problem with a student’s selections they will see a message explaining the issue. Students must confirm their selections before the final deadline on 9 October 2011, but are advised to complete the process as soon as possible, as some modules can be very popular and have only limited spaces (teaching begins in the week of 26 September 2011).
If you are an undergraduate student based at Mile End you will need to complete online module registration, specifying which modules you intend to take during your first year. Over the course of your degree it is expected that you will take modules to the value of 360 credits for the three-year BA, BSc and BEng degrees or 390 credits in the case of Languages degrees. This equates to 24 modules (or equivalent) in total (8 per year). You must register for your choice of modules at the start of term and re-confirm Semester 2 modules ONLY at the beginning of the second semester. You can modify your choice(s) during the first two weeks of each semester ONLY. It is your responsibility to ensure that your module registration is up-to-date and accurate.
Once a student has confirmed their module selections in MySIS, a member of staff in their academic school or institute will receive the selections and consider them for approval. Students may be asked to meet with a member of staff (academic advisor) at this point to discuss their selections. Students and supervisors can also send messages to each other through MySIS, so students should log in regularly to check for these.
Students can make changes to their module selections at this stage. To do so, students must speak to their academic advisor directly and explain why they wish to change the selection. If the advisor is happy with the student’s decision then s/he will reject the student’s initial choices, allowing the student to start the process again in MySIS from the beginning. This will undo all selections, however, and students should note that they may risk losing their places on popular modules by doing this.
Students will receive an email letting them know the decision of the academic advisor in their school or institute. If the selections were successful, the student will be registered on to the modules listed in the message. If the selections were unsuccessful, the email will explain why and will ask the student to log in to MySIS again and make new selections, repeating the process until module registration is complete.
Module Directory
Please use the Module Directory in consultation with your adviser to help make your module selection. Please note that your choice of modules may be limited depending on the programme you are taking, pre-requisites and co-requisites.
