Where can I access PCs?
An extensive network of PCs is made available for students in several rooms on each of the College campuses. For more information, including where to find PCs, how to access them, what software they are installed with and advice on printing, please refer to the Student Service PC User Fact Sheet. There is also a live PC availability page, which will give you up-to-the-minute information on the number of PCs available to use in each area.
College Wi-Fi and internet on campus and in halls
You can access the internet around the College by either signing in to one of the PCs available in various locations on campus, by connecting your own computer to one of the network points in halls of residence, or via the College's Wi-Fi network. For full details on each of these methods, please refer to the Connecting Your PC To The College Network page.
What is Blackboard?
Blackboard is Queen Mary's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and is used by many lecturers for tasks including:
- publishing programme materials
- running online learning activities
- hosting discussions
- making announcements
- hosting podcasts and videos of lectures
- online submission of work
- running assessments
- online feedback
- publishing provisional grades.
If your lecturer uses Blackboard for some or all of these purposes, it is likely to play an important role in your learning at Queen Mary and you should try to login each day to ensure you don't miss out on anything.
Blackboard can be accessed via the E-Learning website, using the same username and password you use to access your email and other electronic services. Please note that you will only be able to access all of your course information on Blackboard once you are fully enrolled. Further guidance on accessing Blackboard can be found on the E-Learning support web pages.
Printing, photocopying and scanning
There are photocopiers for student use in all the Libraries. These can be used to photocopy, scan and, at Mile End, to print from the wireless network.
Photocopying is paid for using your Library i-pay account, which is stored on your Queen Mary ID/Library card, and works in the same way as TfL’s Oyster card. There is more information about the Library i-pay account and how it works on the Library website.
The Library photocopiers can also be used as scanners. The scanning service is free, but you do need to have a small balance, of at least 4p, on your Library i-pay account to make it work. You will also need a USB memory stick to save your scanned documents and images. More information about scanning on the Library photocopiers is available on the Library website.
A wireless printing service is available at the Mile End Library. This is also paid for using the Library i-pay account. You will need to download and install the wireless printing package to use the wireless printing service. More information about wireless printing at Mile End Library is available on the Library website.
Charges for photocopying and wireless printing:
Paper size | A4 | A3 |
Black and white | 4p | 8p |
Colour | 20p | 40p |
Prices are doubled for double-sided copies.
Please note:
The Library i-pay account is used to pay for:
- Library Fines
- Photocopying in all Queen Mary Libraries
- Wireless prints at Mile End Library
It is not used to pay for printouts sent to IT Services printers from Student PC’s located in the Libraries and around campus. These are paid for by purchasing IT Services printing scratch cards. More information about printing from IT Services Student PC’s is available on the Library website and in the Student Service PC User Fact Sheet on the IT Services website.
