Researchers at Queen Mary, in collaboration with research groups in the United States, have shown why gum disease can become more common with old age. Professor Mike Curtis led on the microbiological studies in the research. The study, published in Nature Immunology, reveals that the deterioration in gum health that often occurs as we age is associated with a drop in the level of a chemical called Del-1. Understanding more about this chemical, and the effect it has on the immune system, could help in the treatment or prevention of serious gum disease.
