Professor McOwan, who coordinates a five year EU initiative called LIREC – Living with Robots and IntEractive Companions – has concerns over the wider ethical and moral issues surrounding artificial intelligence and ‘social robots’. He says: “Artificial intelligence is seeping into society more and more, so we need to think carefully about what sort of safeguards are put into place for these ethical issues.”
