In his inaugural lecture on 10 March Professor O’Shaughnessy discussed why rhetoric is so effective in manipulating mass consciousness and how its misuse has furthered the agenda of sinister causes throughout history. The topic is now rarely studied as a separate academic discipline in the UK, but Professor O’Shaughnessy argued that "rhetoric is not a trivial instrument or a decorative motif in history". On several occasions it has even acted as "the amanuensis of genocide".
