Supermarkets, coffee shops and fast food chains are offering Christmas menus containing “shocking” levels of salt that can lead to serious health problems. The Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) group, which is based at Queen Mary, studied 87 products on offer and singled out a festive sandwich from the EAT chain containing 4.2g of salt, more than two thirds of the recommended daily allowance. “Salt puts up our blood pressure, which is the major risk factor for strokes, heart failure and heart disease, the leading causes of death and disability in the UK. It is shocking to see so many new products so high in salt,” said Professor MacGregor.
