Iraq remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world, yet as the media concentrates on Afghanistan the west is becoming complacent about the unstable state. Government officials emphasise that the bloodshed in Iraq is decreasing, although up to 400 people are still dying every month. Dr Dodge is critical of those who say the progress that Iraq has made is permanent. He said: “Anyone who claims the undoubted progress Iraq has made is irreversible is either engaged in foolhardy optimism or hubristic spin. There's so much unresolved that progress could easily be reversed. That doesn't necessarily take it back to civil war.”
