Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Science: Dr Thomas Vulliamy
Three US scientists have won the Nobel prize for medicine having discovered a biological gatekeeper that prevents genetic code falling apart as it ages. The prize was awarded to Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak as their discovery will have important implications on future research on ageing, a variety of cancers and inherited diseases. Dr Vulliamy said: “It was their work that has opened up the whole field of telomere biology, with all its promise for cancer cures and prolonging life span.
