After 90 children fell ill from the e-coli bacteria following a visit to a farm in Surrey, an investigation has been launched to look at its implications, which could leave under five-year-olds banned from the petting tours. Similar incidents, on a smaller scale, at Yorkshire farms have sparked concern among parents and teachers. Dr Cutler said it would be hard to get young children to wash their hands thoroughly so a costly alternative would involve screening all animals. He said: “The public reaction to this one is going to require some controls and I am afraid that petting experiences for the under-fives may disappear just because of the costs.”
