Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is hosting a record number of Chevening scholars in the academic year 2017-18.
Eighty-nine Chevening scholars from fifty-six different countries, will study courses as diverse as Banking and Finance Law, Gastroenterology, Sustainable Energy Systems, and Theatre and Performance.
Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Every year, Chevening Scholarships support outstanding candidates across the world to pursue one-year master’s degrees in any subject and at any of the UK’s leading universities. QMUL hosts one of the largest communities of Chevening scholars of any UK university.
In additional to the Chevening Scholars, QMUL is set to welcome 10 Commonwealth Scholars on campus and a further 13 on distance learning courses. The Commonwealth scholarships aim to nurture the UK’s international development aims, wider overseas interests and sustain the principles of the Commonwealth. This year’s students come from countries all over the world including Sierra Leone, Zambia, Malaysia and Pakistan.
For the second time, QMUL will also welcome a Marshall scholar - this year’s recipient, Debbie Samaniego, will be coming from Utah to study for an MA in International Relations in our School of Politics and International Relations. The Marshall scholarship was created to express the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts and is offered to 40 US citizens each year.
These prestigious scholarships, co-funded with QMUL, enable the most outstanding of candidates from across the world to undertake postgraduate studies irrespective of their financial circumstances.

Carla Costa, Chevening Scholar from Brazil and studying an MSc in Marketing, said: “I am extremely happy to be awarded a Chevening Scholarship and for the opportunity to study in a broadly recognized university. Being part of QMUL is a dream come true and will allow me to not only learn with the best professor, but also network within an important community of students from all over the world. For sure, I will make important connections to foster collaboration between Brazil, UK and other countries.”
Arooj Humayun, Commonwealth Shared Scholar from Pakistan and studying an MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering, said: "Thanks to QMUL I have started believing that any dream you have is just one step away from reality. And that step is your hard work and determination. Try, try, try again and soon enough you'll get it. Thank you QMUL for fulfilling my dreams. Can't wait to start this new and exciting journey.”
