QMUL and China's Northwestern Polytechnical University launch Joint Educational Institute

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), one of China’s top universities, have launched a Joint Educational Institute (JEI) to create a broad partnership in providing transnational university education in the field of Engineering Materials.

The JEI, which has been approved by China’s Ministry of Education, includes both undergraduate teaching and the development of a Joint Research Centre to foster research collaboration. The institute will be based at the NPU campuses in Xi’an, in China’s Shaanxi province. It will provide degree programmes in the Materials Sciences, taught in English jointly by NPU staff and QMUL staff from the London campus. Successful students of the institute will be awarded a degree from each of the two universities.

QMUL President and Principal Professor Simon Gaskell said: “We are delighted to launch the QMUL-NPU Joint Educational Institute in Xi’an. It is an important step in our developing partnership with Northwestern Polytechnical University and builds on our strong track record of collaboration with leading Chinese universities. We look forward to providing our students with access to the best traditions and practice of British and Chinese education and research.”

NPU President Wang Jinsong said: “I am delighted that the NPU-QMUL Engineering School has been established. It is a strong indication of the deep trust and close collaboration between NPU and QMUL. Through the JEI, I believe, both sides will learn from each other and will explore the possibilities of international higher education. I am confident that the JEI students will experience the essence of culture and education from both countries, and the graduates will be equipped with better skills to face international competition”.

QMUL Vice Principal for Science and Engineering, Professor Edmund Burke, said: “The launch of this new JEI with Northwestern Polytechnical University, one of China’s premier universities, is a significant milestone for the Faculty of Science and Engineering at QMUL. Not only does it enable us to expand our offshore degree programme provision, it will also support a long-lasting research partnership in materials science, which is an area of international strength for both institutions.”

The JEI will in the first instance recruit students to two undergraduate programmes, BEng Polymer Materials Science and Engineering as well as BEng Materials Science and Engineering, from September 2017.
