Funding: Research

We have launched three new award schemes aimed at early stage and developmental work in life sciences.

ISSF Small Grants Fund

The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) Small Grants Fund is an early stage fund designed to support pilot projects aimed at the identification and early support of promising ideas for the future development of larger proposals and initiatives.

A next round of funding from this scheme is now open, with a deadline for applications of 27 May 2016. There is £34,000 available, and applications are invited for a variety of large and small pilot projects. The following people have been awarded funding from this scheme in the second round:

  • Tina Chowdhury, School of Engineering and Materials Science (lead academic), in collaboration with Dr Alvaro Mata, School of Engineering and Materials Science: “Repair of trachea defects in babies with foetal stem cells and bioactive membrane technology”.
  • Helena Azevedo, School of Engineering and Materials Science (lead academic), in collaboration with Kristin Braun, Blizard Institute: “Biocomplex matrices for studying wound healing in vitro towards customised regenerative therapies for chronic wounds”.
  • Kate Spencer, Geography (lead academic), in collaboration with Andy Bushby, School of Engineering and Materials Science: “Nanopollutants and microplastics in the environment”.
  • Miles Hansard, School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (lead academic), in collaboration with Isabelle Mareschal, School of Biological and Chemical Sciences: “Evaluation of commodity gaze-trackers for large-scale neuropsychological studies”.
  • Maxie Roessler, School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, in collaboration with Dr Sarah Barry (King's College London): “New biocatalytic routes to biologically important amino acid derivatives: determining the function of a novel tryptophan-derivatising enzyme”.

Digital Health Fund

As part of the ISSF Small Grants Fund, the LSI is also inviting applications for research funding in the area of digital health. The LSI Digital Health Fund is an early stage fund to support promising ideas towards external funding applications. 

Interested candidates should apply by completing the form by 4pm Friday 4 March 2016 outlining an early stage project in digital health, which fits within the remit of the LSI, of up to 12 months in duration. The proposal should also describe briefly a second stage of development that could emerge upon the success of the funded project. There is £100,000 available for this round and the LSI will consider applications for both small and large awards within this total budget; funding sought is expected to be clearly matched to the needs of the project. Proposals should have a clear interdisciplinary focus and/or involve new joint working across disciplinary boundaries and/or build new collaborations. Projects with external partners and co-funded projects are also welcome.

ISSF Proof of Concept Fund

Sitting alongside QMUL’s established Proof of Concept Fund, this LSI Fund is aimed at supporting work that is intended to develop new life science ideas, technologies or processes from a pilot or early-stage exploration to the next stage of a more comprehensive commercial plan.

Fundable projects must be within the remit of the QMUL LSI and have a clear interdisciplinary focus and/or involve new joint working across disciplinary boundaries.

Funding is for a maximum of £50,000 for projects of up to twelve months duration.

Early Career Stage Researchers Bridging Fund

Support for researchers early in their careers (ECRs) is essential to ensuring that they are able to take full advantage of opportunities to develop and succeed. Critical points typically occur in transition periods, when funding rounds for fellowships, major grants and permanent positions may not coincide with contract end-points.

The LSI ECR Bridging Fund is aimed at addressing this need and will support periods of funding for up to four months for the salary costs of four leading ECRs working within the relevant research areas of the LSI. Some matching funding commitment is required from the home School or Institute of the ECR – equal to 30% of the ISSF funding.

A third round of funding is now open and applications for support under this scheme are invited. Interested candidates should apply by completing the form by 27 May 2016. A copy of the applicant’s CV, together with a letter of support from the Head of School/Institute Director and an email confirming the School/Institute Manager has been informed and agrees due to the financial implications imposed should also be sent to Naheedah.choudhury@qmul.ac.uk

Applications that plan to use the Bridging Fund to support explorations of how the work of the ECR may cross over into other disciplines, and/or engage with new partners, are encouraged. The start dates of awards will depend on the specific needs of individuals.
