Short Term Programmes (non QMUL)

The following study abroad opportunities will be available to students in 2017. Any students interested in applying should contact the host institutions, and if successful should notify the QMUL Global Opportunities Office at



BUNAC offer work, internship and volunteer opportunities abroad on every continent.  Opportunities for summer programmes exist around the world and include working at summer camps in the USA, teaching English across the globe and volunteering in the arts, sport or conservation.  Some scholarships are available.

University of California Irvine Summer Session

Dates: The programme runs on various dates from June through to September. Please check the institutional site for full details.

Details:This programme offers a rich academic schedule and co-curricular activities, allowing students to experience American culture and university life first-hand. UCI offers more than 800 courses across 70 subject areas. Students have the option to enrol in two courses or take a smaller academic load by combining one course within your major and one Academic English course. 

Fees: Approx. USD $4,014, with a separate cost of approximately US $2000 for accommodation and meal plan. Students will be required to pay their own travel, visa, and insurance costs.

George Washington University – Summer and Special Programs

Dates: There are 2 sessions for the programme, usually in May and June each year. Please see the instiutional pages for full details.

Details: George Washington University offers the chance to build your own schedule of classes according to your interests. Courses may be selected from more than 650 undergraduate and graduate options. After being accepted, an advisor will work with you to select courses that fit your academic background. 

Fees: TBC; although there is a 30% tuition fee discount offered to students from partner institutions.

Red Tree Study - Spanish Courses, Internships and Academic Programs in Colombia

Dates: Dates vary for each individual programme. Please consult the website. Programmes can vary from 3 weeks to 6 weeks.

Details: Red Tree offers a number of programmes in Colombia, whether you’re looking for a long or short-term Spanish course, a film internship or a peace building exercise. 

Fees: Fees are dependent on the programme selected, however Red Tree are offering QMUL students one 50% scholarship for the Community Health course and another 50% scholarship for the film programme.

McGill University’s School of Continuing Studies

Dates: July 30th to August 17th 2018.

Details: Offering prestige, culture and fun, McGill University’s School of Continuing Studies provides international students with unique opportunities to learn and experience something new both in and out of the classroom. Students have the chance to study a range of modules, from Aerospace Engineering to language and culture courses in French. There are also modules that offer more career-specific skills such as Human Resources or Leadership. 

Fees: Dependent on course but start at CAD $1500 (approximately £921) and work up to CAD $3985 (approximately £2446). Students should check the brochure to find out exact prices and what the fees include as a package. There is an early bird offer if you apply before March 31st 2018.

University of Guadalajara Spanish Summer course 2017

Dates: Usually June-July each year.

Details: This programme is for those who are interested in learning or wish to improve their Spanish language skills. The participants also have the opportunity to learn about Mexican culture and raise intercultural awareness. Topics include Mexican History & Culture, as well as Spanish for Business. Outside of the classroom, students will have the chance to visit various places of interest, such as Mexican Wrestling (lucha libre), Tequila town and much more. 

Fees: Approx. USD $2500 (approximately £2000). This includes: tuition fees, materials, cultural activities & transportation, accommodation, meals, welcome kit and a certificate once the course is completed.

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia

Dates: August each year (3 weeks)

Details: UiTM are delighted to welcome QMUL students to experience Malaysia and its cultural diversity through various summer programmes designed in  (but not limited to) the following themes: Culture & art, Biodiversity, Business Management, Technology advancement,  Language. 

Fees: Dependent on course.

University of Malaya AEI-ASEM Summer School

Dates: July-August each year, with the possibility of spending 1 extra week in Brussels (subject to terms and conditions). 

Details: The University of Malaya is running their third summer school this year, focussed on ‘Cultural Pluralism in Asia and Europe’. This is an ongoing initiative encompassing socio-cultural and socio-economic issues of the two continents, which aims to foster ties between Asia and Europe through a deeper understanding of both regions’ national and cultural heritage. 

Fees: There are 2 different participation fees: 

1) 2 weeks in Malaysia: Appox. USD $700 (approximately £567)
2) 2 weeks in Malaysia + 1 week in Brussels (subject to terms): Approx. USD $1000 (approximately £811)

Tsinghua university, China

Dates: July 16th- July 27th 2018

Details: This year, Tsinghua will once again run the Experiencing China programme. There are 13 specially designated learning tracks covering a myriad of fascinating topics in the China context including Architecture, Chinese geography, Chinese history, Creative city, Education, Entrepreneurship, Environment, Industry frontiers, Innovation, Online education, Tomorrow’s youth, Urbanization and Women. The programme consists of keynote lectures, group tutorials, field-trips and cultural experiences led by renowned scholars and experts. It also provides opportunities for participants to interact with local students and visit historical sites in Beijing.

Fees: Tsinghua University offers summer school scholarship places for students interested in their 2018 programme. This would cover the registration & tuition fees, on-campus accommodation and basic accident insurance for the two-week period in Beijing. Students are required to cover their own airfare costs, and
adequate personal medical insurance for their stay in China as required by both Tsinghua University and Chinese visa applications.

Generation UK: Internships in China

This opportunity is for final year students only, or students who have graduated less than 1 year ago.

Dates: This opportunity could last from 1 semester to 1 year.

Details: Spend two months next year interning in an industry of your choice in one of the world's most fascinating countries! With six exciting locations and over 15 different industry sectors to choose from, whether that's business, engineering, law, marketing, design etc., there's a wealth of experience and adventure waiting at your feet!

Fees: Generation UK – China funding will cover all placement fees, accommodation and comprehensive travel insurance, as well as your airport pick-up and dedicated support throughout your placement. As part of the programme, you will also receive weekly Chinese language classes and take part in business/cultural activities, offering you valuable insight into the customs and traditions of China. You’ll need to budget for your day-to-day expenses, which largely depend on where you’re living and your own lifestyle. Previous interns have been able to get by perfectly happily on the equivalent of about £50 a week, but it’s entirely up to you. You’ll also need to pay for your flights, visa and any other expenses related to your travel.

The University of Haifa’s International School

Dates: July 2018

 The University of Haifa’s International School will be launching a new language program this coming summer: Intensive July Spoken Arabic. Classes meet four days a week for five hours each day. In order to provide an opportunity for students to actually speak Arabic and immerse themselves in the culture, an academic tour will be offered on the fifth day to locations of interest in various Arab communities in Israel.

International Summer school New Delhi 

Dates: June - August each year. Please see the insitutional website for full details.

For their third year since opening, the International Summer School New Delhi has opened applications for their 6 week intensive summer school programme. The programme will take place at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The programme offers courses for anyone who is interested in any of the following: Indian Politics, Indian Economy, Sociology and Indian History. In the final 2 weeks, students partake in fieldwork which includes a community outreach programme usually based in Rajasthan. 

Fees: The programme costs approx.USD $2875; accommodation is not included but can be provided at an additional cost.

Universitas Indonesia- UI Creates Programme

Dates: Two sessions in August. For full details please consult the institutional webpages.

Details: UI CREATES is a 2-week program where students of participating universities can earn 3 credits by taking 1 available subject offered by Universitas Indonesia (UI). Students will not only study the selected course, but will also learn Indonesian language and culture, go on cultural visits, and join field study program at selected institutions related to the subject.

Fees: Term 1 is usually approx. USD $500, Term 2 is USD $650 (approximately £400-£500). This does not include accommodation, but does include tuition fee, excursions, lunch, airport transfer and local transportation throughout the programme. Students can apply for a scholarship to cover their accommodation fee.

Nanyang Technological University GEM Trailblazer Summer

Dates: 6 week session: 25th June- 3rd August 2018. 4 week session: 2nd July- 27th July 2018

Details: The programme offers 5 course options to QMUL students:

Fees: Students from partner universities can receive a 60% discount of NTU GEM Trailblazer tuition fees. Please consult their page for exact pricing.

The application will open 15th February 2018 and close on 20th April 2018. Students should consult NTU's website for further information. 

SJTU-ICCI Summer School

Dates: There are usaully 2 sessions; one in July and one in August. For full details please consult the instituitonal webpages.

Details: Global Summer School provides excellent opportunities for students to learn about China through academic and cultural immersion during this summer. A wide range of courses in various disciplines are provided, including Public Policy and City Governance, Brain Science and Technology, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Culture, Urban Horticulture and Its Culture, and Discovering Chinese Creativity, each of which will be accompanied with Chinese language courses for both beginners and intermediate learners. In addition to academic lectures, local excursions, cultural activities and field trips are also available for International participants. From these extracurricular activities, students will learn more about Chinese culture, history, politics and latest development. 

Fees: Varies due to different packages, but can be anywhere between USD $1050 (£837) and USD $1804(£1438).

Waseda University Summer Sessions

Dates: June 25th- July 19th 2018

Details: Participants will choose 2 from 14 courses such as literature and art, business, culture, economics, history, politics and sociology in the context of Japan and Asia pacific. The classes are taught in English by experienced faculty members from Waseda and visiting professors from the top global universities. Japanese classes can be taken as an optional course. Extra-curricular activities such as field trips, site visits and cultural events to experience Tokyo and Japan are also organised for the duration.

Fees: Approximately JPY ¥490,000. Please view Waseda's website for further information. 

The application period for 2018 intake is March 1st – April 1st. 

Hong Kong University Summer Institute

Dates: TBC. 

Details: The HKU Summer Institute is offering an extensive range of programmes for 2017, covering various disciplines including arts, social science, science and business. As well as the campus based programme, there are also multi location programmes offering travel to Beijing, Yunnan or Seoul with the aim of rewarding students with the experience of international exposure and cultural exchange. The HKU Summer Institute is divided into two sessions. Most of the programmes will last 3-4 weeks and offer 6-12 HKU credits. 

Fees: The cost of the campus based programme ranges from HKD 7580 to 16,000, while the cost of the multi location programme is higher and varied according to location. A 10% discount on tuition fees is also offered to students from HKU partner universities. Accommodation in HKU costs approximately HKD 2,000 per week and is optional for students.

University of Tokyo 'UTRIP'

This course is not suitable for first or final year students. 

Dates: There are 2 sessions for this programme, usually in June and August.

Details: UTRIP is a 6-week summer internship program for students majoring in natural science and other relevant fields. It provides students with an opportunity to gain the experience of "real graduate-school life" or "research-centered life." UTRIP is a gateway to pursuing an advanced degree and experiencing academic life at University of Tokyo. Participants on UTRIP will also be granted financial support to cover their costs and expenses. You will also get the opportunity to take part in cultural activities and excursions to learn more about Japan, such as a Japanese language course and a culture workshop.

University of Sydney Study Abroad Internship Programme 

Dates: Session A: 26 May – 7 July 2018 Session B: 8 July – 11 August 2018

Details: Students are able to enrol in either session and take one or two classes (up to 12 credit points) from a selection of 30 classes. This fabulous program includes airport pickup, orientation, social events and guaranteed accommodation for students who apply by our accommodation deadline.

Fees: Courses cost between $3,075 AUD and $6,150 AUD (approximately £1762.96- £3525.92). Accomomdation is guaranteed for 6 weeks (Session A) or 5 weeks (Session B) at $360 AUD per week (£206 approximately).
