Recognition of Japanese qualifications for Foundation courses
Foundation Courses (1 year)
Academic:
- A good Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho (Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate)

Recognition of Japanese qualifications for Undergraduate Entry
Undergraduate Degrees (3 and 4 years)
Academic:
- UK Foundation or,
- Undergraduate bachelor degree year 1 with GPA 3.2 on a scale of 4 / 75% from a recognised university in Japan or,
- Associate Degree in a related subject with grade B or above or,
- 3 A levels or,
- International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

Please note that students with an associate degree from Japan will be considered for both year 1 and year 2 entry. However, Associate Degree holders with 3-5 years of related work experience, may be considered for the Postgraduate Foundation Programme . [New window]
English Language Requirements
- Please refer to English language and foundation courses for different course requirements.
- Students with A’ levels or IB will not require IELTS or TOEFL
- Students who achieve slightly below these requirements may be admitted onto a presessional English course at Queen Mary. Please see the Entry Level Guidelines for English Languagefor full details.

Recognition of Japanese qualifications for Graduate Entry
Master's degrees (all one year)
Academic:
- 4 year undergraduate Bachelor's degree with GPA 3.2 on a scale of 4 / 75%+ from a recognised university in Japan
The usual entrance requirement to a taught Master's degree is the equivalent of an upper second-class honours degree from a UK university. This is approximately a GPA of 3.2 on a scale of 4 /75% in Japan . However, all applications are considered on an individual basis and students may be admitted to Master's programmes with a lower level degree if they have work experience relevant to the degree applied for.
English:
- IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 580 +TWE 4 / TOEFL CBT 243
- Law courses require English level IELTS 7.5 / TOEFL 630 + TWE 5 / TOEFL CBT 267+ TWE 5
Research degree (Mphil/PhD: 3 years)
The usual entrance requirement for a research degree is a Master's degree from a UK university or recognised university in Japan . However many departments also accept student with the equivalent of an upper second class bachelor degree from a UK university (GPA 3.2 on a scale of 4 /75% in Japan )
