Research

Research Interests:

My research focuses on transatlantic intellectual history and the history of legal and political thought. I’m especially interested in the history of international and global order, and in the concepts, norms, and institutions relating to law and politics at these scales.  In my forthcoming book, Statelessness: A Modern History (with Harvard University Press) I trace the history of statelessness from the nineteenth century to the present day. The book considers how theories of rights, sovereignty, international legal order, and cosmopolitan justice developed in response to the proliferation of people outside the boundaries of international political order.
