The Innovation and Enterprise Unit has the pleasure of inviting you to "An Introduction to Intellectual Property and its Relevance to Research Scientists".

This event will be held in the John Vane Building, Charterhouse Square, on the morning of Thursday 22 November 2007 for the School of Medicine and Dentistry and the GE Fogg Biology Building, Mile End, on the afternoon of Thursday 22 November 2007 for Science and Engineering.

The course is being run by experienced technology transfer practitioners from IP Pragmatics Limited and has been generously sponsored by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). It is open to everyone.

This introductory course aims to provide researchers who are at a career stage where they will want and be expected to take a more direct responsibility for the creation, protection and exploitation of intellectual property, with relevant hands-on knowledge of:

• Intellectual Property (IP) policy: The University and Funding Body policies with respect to intellectual property and the people responsible for implementing this.
• Introduction to IP: what constitutes intellectual property and how this can be protected.
• Evaluating and exploiting IP: how intellectual property can be exploited and the benefits/pitfalls for the researcher and University of the different approaches that can be taken.
• Implementing best practice: how researchers can best work with their technology transfer office to maximise the value and minimise the impact intellectual property can have on their research activities.

The course will have an interactive format, with a mixture of notes and hands-on case studies. The speakers will be available throughout to answer questions that arise from the course and/or answer any general questions you may have that relate to intellectual property and its exploitation.

Both morning and afternoon workshops will be followed by networking drinks and food. Please register your interest as soon as possible as places are limited and are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
