Information, Information, Information: from focused to aggregated answers
Professor Mounia Lalmas
Digitised information is everywhere. We rely on it to answer many of our information needs. Sometimes we need focused answers, for example the date of a meeting that was communicated by email; other times we need aggregated answers, for example travel, weather and accommodation information for London. Huge progress has been made in providing focused answers, whereas work has only started to provide aggregated answers. The two types of answers are however not unrelated. This lecture will demonstrate that the provision of aggregated answers requires the elicitation of focused answers, which can be intelligently combined to form an aggregated answer.
