Dear teacher,

I am writing to you with an update on events and resources available from the School of Mathematical Sciences at Queen Mary. All of our activities are free of charge and range from publications you can use with pupils and parents to events for pupils and teachers.

Lectures for Teachers: February - May

This series is aimed at teachers of mathematics who are interested in exploring and expanding their knowledge across a variety of mathematical topics. Lectures are delivered by our academic staff and hosted at the Bridge Academy (in London, E2). These free events will also offer an opportunity for networking with other teachers and refreshments will be provided. Full details available here.

Year 10 Taster Courses: 4th, 5th or 6th July

Students will attend a day of talks and workshops on topics such as number theory and topology. The aim of the day is to encourage more students to think about taking mathematics further at A-level and university. To book in a group from your school please download and return the booking form, available here.

A-level Taster Courses: April, June or July 2012

These taster days give students an idea of what it's like to study mathematics at university. The 2012 courses are on mathematics, pure mathematics and mathematics with business and finance. Lectures cover topics from our undergraduate modules and are delivered by the lecturers who teach them. Booking is open now and available online via the Careers Group: http://www.lon.ac.uk/tasters

Art of Mathematics: 9th - 14th July

Designed to give an in-depth experience of what it’s like to study mathematics at university, the Art of Mathematics will allow Year 12 students to explore a mathematical topic in detail. Working with post-graduate and academic staff, students will improve their mathematical knowledge but also develop their problem solving and communication skills. Full details and application form available here.

Parents' Guide to Studying Mathematics

Aimed at parents whose children are thinking about studying mathematics, articles cover what the subject is like at university, the finance arrangements for 2012 and what careers graduates can expect to go into. The publication can be viewed online here, but hard copies are available free of charge. Reply to this e-mail if you would like to request copies to be sent to you.
